If you are looking for lightweight and short barrel, you should look at these.

Hmm. Hadn’t thought about a pistol. The longer the barrel the more velocity/accuracy? So a 10” barrel is better than an 8”?

Just remember to get all the gear you need for that lightweight rifle and consider that it being light weight might not hold all your gear.

Your gonna want to attach a forend grip, a rail, a laser in green, another laser in red, a red dot, a magnifier on a tilt mount, a long range side mount scope, and side pockets for your fishing gear and a knife. Lot of people forget that.
If your real serious get the stock that olds your tent.

If you go with a .223/55.6. I'd say stick with a 16" barrel. If you go with a 300 blackout go with a 9" up to 10.5" the 55.6 looses too much feet per second. For my liking.
As far as accuracy, how far do you plan to shoot and with what sights? It probably doesn't matter if it's 100 yards or less.

Okay gun guys (and girls), I’m looking to get into an AR-15. Husband is an AK guy but he’s found an Armalite AR-15 LTC that weighs 6lbs unloaded. It has a 16” barrel. He said that was pretty much the lightest AR but that GLP was filled with gun knowledge people and see what someone here says.

Anyway, I’m looking for a lightweight AR that’s as short as possible without having to go through NFA tax stamp hassles. My price range is $900-$1200; $1200 being pretty much max.

I’m trying to get advice before I go to purchase because I’m sure they’ll think I’m just a dumb girl and they’ll try and sell me what they have instead of what I want: a short and light AR.

Some great advice everyone! Thank you all hf

Oh and those damn AK’s are just too heavy for me. Especially with a full magazine. I’ll wimp out quick so I need something lighter :-)

Correct. I was also going to say. My 5.56 is really light. I bought the faxon pencil barrel. It's actually kind of weird light though. Lighter than I expected

Get a Colt M4 LE6920 carbine (6.9 lbs.) or a FN 15 16" Patrol Carbine (6.2 lbs.). Both at around $1100 MSRP. After you get used to it, try modding it. A drop in rail system is a good start.

Absolutely buy the Palmetto State.

There are dozens of AR manufacturers in the U.S. but only four actual forges that produce ALL of them.

Palmetto State owns one of the 4 forges.

Thats why they are cheaper.

And DO NOT Listen to clowns telling you to hang alot of shit off your AR.

I was a combat light infantry soldier (as were many others on this site).

You don't need any of that shit.

Buy a GOOD sling (I prefer Vickers combat application sling) costs about $70 bucks but best sling I've seen.

For home defense you may well want a small light attached to the barrel but that's it!

You don't need to spend alot on an AR (I will spend MUCH more on a good .45)

Good luck and be careful about listing to keyboard warriors who's only experience is call of duty.... lol 😆

There is an AR-15 that exactly meets your specs - it’s the Bushmaster Carbon-15.

It weighs 4.5 lbs without ammo. It has almost no kick.

I paid about $600 for mine.

Having a super light rifle isn't always the best way to go.

Having a little weight to it reduces the kick into your shoulder and can be much more comfortable to shoot.

Find one that is a good balance between weight and comfort IMO
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80751884

You Clearly have never fired an AR 15.
There is absolutely zero kick whatsoever.

My advice is to not trust advice. When it comes to guns people have a lot of strong, baseless opinions. They repeat things they’ve heard. They repeat something they read in an article. Most people haven’t shot a lot of different guns. Most people haven’t owned and maintained a lot of different guns. So very few people actually have broad enough experience to have a very useful opinion.

This!
The AR-15 is a VERY CHICK FRIENDLY weapon.
They have virtually zero kick, they’re very powerful and they hold a ton of ammo.

I believe 16 is the shortest one can go without needing to purchase an ATF license or stamp or whatever to own a true short 10 inch barrel. 16 is still short enough and no matter what gun you get it will be heavier than you were expecting.
I went shooting for the first time in years and was surprised how much heavier it felt in my now old and out of shape hands. I like Lewis Machine and Tool but those are pricey.

Re: I need advice on an AR-15
So a couple of things. First, since your man likes AK's, you should consider a 300 blackout AR15 pistol. It will be very comparable to his AK is many aspects. Second, depends on what state you live in for all of this, so that is important. Anyways, get a 30 cal brake with an out the front cover. It will help reduce the kick, and also send sound down range rather than to the side. Next, arm brace, but add on a folding stock attachment. As for barrel, get a nitrided barrel. They will be more accurate than the chrome ones, and last as long if not longer. That's been a back and forth battle for years which is better. Most people don't shoot 10k rounds of both to compare. I like to buy parts on deltateamtactical. It's the walmart of gun parts, so not the best quality always, but none of my guns have failed me. If you've shot enough, get a 3 pound trigger. It makes everything complete. Good luck. You will shoot better with an AR if you get a scope, compared to his AK. They are usually pretty worn out by the time normal people own them. So usually not the most accurate.
 Quoting: miedoso

OP - please ignore EVERYTHING this man? has said.
The 5.56 AR has absolutely no kick whatsoever.

300 blackout is harder to find and stupid expensive.
300 blackout is really good for one thing only - it's VERY quiet and absolutely amazing with sub sonic (specialty) rounds and a suppressor.

You DO NOT need a scope unless you want one.

That is a fine choice, but do a web search first before you go out and buy something. You can find AR type rifles all overt the place. Try Gundeals.com, budsgunshop.com, kygunco.com... There is a whole slew of others.

If you want to save some money and still get a good gun, look at Palmetto State Armory, palmettostatearmory.com.

If you order off the internet, you'll have to select a local dealer for the rifle to be sent to. Then you can take delivery from that dealer.

Take your time. options are plentiful.

Fantastic posts everyone! Very helpful and no this is a real question for GLP, not bait like someone said.

I’m glad someone talked about adding a light and maybe a laser. I was curious about a flashlight but I doubt I’ll put a laser sight on it. My husband agrees about not hanging a bunch of stuff off of it. He’s saying he’s going to put an eotech on it for a sight.

Mostly I just need it light weight and as short as I can get it. Thank you for the info about the barrel length. I don’t really want to fool with any NFA things like a silencer or short rifle barrel. My husband is saying that whole process would take several months and be a hassle.

Seriously, thanks everyone!

Most gun dealers will go out of their way to try to sell you a weapon that's most appropriate for you. I've never seen a gun shop trying to sell anyone, especially a woman, more gun than they can handle. Maybe some of those second hand pawn shops will do that, but not the regular gun shops.
