Just remember to get all the gear you need for that lightweight rifle and consider that it being light weight might not hold all your gear.

Your gonna want to attach a forend grip, a rail, a laser in green, another laser in red, a red dot, a magnifier on a tilt mount, a long range side mount scope, and side pockets for your fishing gear and a knife. Lot of people forget that.
If your real serious get the stock that olds your tent.

I like your style brah.

You forgot bipod, bayonet, and m203 Grenade launcher.

You two are idiots and have no business offering advice to anyone.

You really didn’t get the sarcasm here?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80749056

No, I honestly didn't catch it because I hear that same crap so often repeated.

Sorry I missed the sarcasm and jumped.

Re: I need advice on an AR-15
So a couple of things. First, since your man likes AK's, you should consider a 300 blackout AR15 pistol. It will be very comparable to his AK is many aspects. Second, depends on what state you live in for all of this, so that is important. Anyways, get a 30 cal brake with an out the front cover. It will help reduce the kick, and also send sound down range rather than to the side. Next, arm brace, but add on a folding stock attachment. As for barrel, get a nitrided barrel. They will be more accurate than the chrome ones, and last as long if not longer. That's been a back and forth battle for years which is better. Most people don't shoot 10k rounds of both to compare. I like to buy parts on deltateamtactical. It's the walmart of gun parts, so not the best quality always, but none of my guns have failed me. If you've shot enough, get a 3 pound trigger. It makes everything complete. Good luck. You will shoot better with an AR if you get a scope, compared to his AK. They are usually pretty worn out by the time normal people own them. So usually not the most accurate.
 Quoting: miedoso

OP - please ignore EVERYTHING this man? has said.
The 5.56 AR has absolutely no kick whatsoever.

300 blackout is harder to find and stupid expensive.
300 blackout is really good for one thing only - it's VERY quiet and absolutely amazing with sub sonic (specialty) rounds and a suppressor.

You DO NOT need a scope unless you want one.
 Quoting: Elevenbravo214

Ignore anything you said. The 300 blackout does kick. Why? Because weight of bullet. Not a lot, but it kicks more than the 5.56. Also, the 300 blackout was the only ammo for sale when everything else was sold out. So bs on not finding ammo. It has near matched ballistics of the AK. So if the 300 bo is so bad, then the AK round is equally as bad. So you have no idea what you speak of. The 300 blackout also can shoot out of the pistol length barrels better than a 5.56. She has said she is getting a red dot. So in that case, a 300 bo would be an excellent setup. You are wrong buddy. Lastly to the OP. The pistols we speak of, are not short barrel rifles via the ATF. If you start with a pistol it stays a pistol. Short barrel and arm brace. That is why we were recommending those. They are short and legal in most states.

Re: I need advice on an AR-15
Okay gun guys (and girls), I’m looking to get into an AR-15. Husband is an AK guy but he’s found an Armalite AR-15 LTC that weighs 6lbs unloaded. It has a 16” barrel. He said that was pretty much the lightest AR but that GLP was filled with gun knowledge people and see what someone here says.

Anyway, I’m looking for a lightweight AR that’s as short as possible without having to go through NFA tax stamp hassles. My price range is $900-$1200; $1200 being pretty much max.

I’m trying to get advice before I go to purchase because I’m sure they’ll think I’m just a dumb girl and they’ll try and sell me what they have instead of what I want: a short and light AR.
 Quoting: Truth Brush

Get an AR pistol and a brace. Lightweight, short barrel, no tax stamp.
 Quoting: Depluribus Unum

OP, from a female ex-mil, the very short rifles produce a lot of recoil. Hard recoil will hurt the shoulder and make it longer to re-sight after each shot. The gunpowder for a larger round like 5.56 produces a shock, and the steel of the Ar's frame and barrel absorb some of the shock. The AR pistols look cool in the movies and I guess they would be more ergonomic to shoot from the front seat of a car. I'd stick with the 16". Or, try both at a range first before you buy. It's like trying on shoes at a store vs ordering a pair online.

This proves itself again and again...

If you take a group of 100 people, each with decades of experience with guns, and ask them what they think...

You will get 100 different answers and all of them will have excellent reasons for their choices and excellent reasons why all the others suck.

LOL

Moreover, my personal preferences changed over the years as I gained more experience. What was best for me as a noob wasn’t the best for me when I wasn’t a noob anymore.

I disagree, more ar15 out there, light, cheap, no kick.

Most important is that in shtf more people have ar15 than AK.

If you were in Belarus or something then I would recommend AK for this reason.

Build a 10" AR pistol in 7.62x39.....Anderson lower with SB stock, and BCA upper (I prefer side-charging). About $600 total and you've got the firepower of an AK-47 at a bargain price. It has more firepower at 100 yards than 5.56 does at the muzzle. I love mine!!!!!

DO NOT LET THEM SELL YOU AN AR WITH A GAS PISTON ROD, get the old gaurge to finger my buttholeement system. No sharp recoil

Get a Flat Top receiver and add your own flip up sights.

Get .223 cal and ignore the exotics like 300 blackout.

16 in barrel and folding stock.

Check out the Beretta CX4 Carbine in 9mm also.

Most AR's are pretty much the same.

please don't consider an AR pistol if you are untrained.
min 14"barrel for defense. anything shorter your gonna blow your fingers off when the muzzle goes haywire on you.
first off why a 5.56?
look at a fx/9 carbine or something similar/easier to accurately handle.
don't get a weapon because it's 'sexy'

I kind of agree with your assessment. Although, many of the people answering, don't have experience of all the different types etc. You can usually see who, when they completely talk bad about a certain gun. They've probably never had that gun. Maybe shot it, but don't own. I like them all, and have many. I was just listening to what OP asked for. Most of the posts saying this gun or that, didn't make it light, like she asked for. I think true gun people that have many types, can answer fairly similarly. I know when I talk to people that are like that, if asked a legit question from a potential new buyer, will have similar answers. Jmho.

Re: I need advice on an AR-15
One paradigm is to think of this as a component system.

Like with living room furniture, you can buy a set or get it piece by piece.

Start with something off the shelf towards the mid-low end like a PSA. Immediately buy a different upper, like a longer barrel upper also in 5.56, or if you get a longer barrel to start, a shorter upper in 5.56 or .300 AAC or 7.62x39. You should be able to get this done for the $1200.

If you get comfortable swapping uppers, the whole gun starts making making more sense as a system. You can have a 16" 5.56, and a 20" 7.62x39 upper that shoots your boyfriends ammo stockpile and you will have a lot more ammo options as well.

Re: I need advice on an AR-15
Quick way to a solid AR that is shorter and lighter:

Go to a shop and grab a complete pistol lower with an sba4 brace. If they don't have one, try a gun show for the same. If not there, order online from Anderson arms, complete pistol lower. Shipped to a local shop.

Get on palmetto state armory site and purchase an 11.5 upper - 1:7 twist.

Snap them together, upper and lower when they arrive.

Pickup a sig Romeo 5 XDR red dot - it's the model with a AAA battery and circle over dot option.

Then grab an informed wml light to attach to the end of the rail.

Finally grab a vickers sling or magpul ms4 sling depending on how you want to attach it and what the rail options are from the factory.

You now have a solid battle rifle covering all the basics that is lightweight and easy to maneuver without shooting the big fireballs out of the front like a 9-10" will.

Re: I need advice on an AR-15
I own one.

The lower cracked at the flat spot above the stock threads/buffer tube.

The pins connecting the upper and lower loosened also.

I bought it for my daughter as it is very light. I have since cut a new billet lower (from an 80% I bought..wink wink) had it cerakoted...etc. Now, I have replaced the trigger group, upper through barrel, bolt carrier..a whole new rifle really.

It does now weigh a bit more but is still manageable.

The crack/pin problem happened after about 90 rounds were put through it.

The POF the other poster mentioned is a much better setup.

I wouldn't buy another
