Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81002935 Just following up. Magnetite is often part of heavy mineral sands. Magnetic separation is often used to separate the heavy minerals from quarts. [ link to faculty.uml.edu (secure)] The simplest form of magnetic separation is by hand magnet, a procedure which works for only one common mineral - magnetite. Other minerals having magnetic susceptibility are separated by using an apparatus that can generate strong electromagnetic fields. Quoting: StudyNot saying one way or another, but those ladies could possibly have just "discovered" magnetite-laden heavy mineral sands and then did a textbook method of hand separating them.
