Re: Don't throw out old electronic equipment until the chip shortage passes.
In the future people may be trying to survive with whatever food they can find maybe with no power and on and on and chips and capacitors etc. etc. will be the last thing on their minds. Oh yes and whatever pandemics etc. they can dream up for us. My guns and survival stuff doesn't need chips.
 Quoting: Endtimewatchman10

You say that, but do you have a red dot aiming device? or a digital gun safe? Or a powered wheat, meat or coffee grinder?

Washing machine? Fridge? TV? Radio?

And do you drive one of those car/truck things?

So much stuff is digital these days. Pretty hard to say to hell with it all.

Same here. I bet I have more generators, Ferro rods and survival knives than you do. :)

No guns though. Lost in the tragic boating accident.

I lost the boat too. As if we didn't have enough to worry about then there is a possible EMP. I have some things protected with Faraday cages, Wonder what other fun things the shadow government is planning for us?

Did you ever try to remove a 32 or 64...or whatever pin chip that's computer soldered to a circuit board? Good luck. And did it ever occur to you that chips are programmed for a particular purpose for that equipment?

Someone is ignorant.

There are procedures for this that work fine.

Even a surface mount 386 DX40 could be de-soldered and replaced.

I studied the EMP and CME possibilities for a while. Some smart guys pretty much convinced me not to worry about it. If it is not attached to a long wire that can serve as an antenna, the semiconductors will likely survive most events.

I just don't have the resources to spare basically everything and put it into a Faraday cage. For a while I put a few radios and a small HAM radio in a trash can with Aluminum HVAC duct tape, but even that I have discontinued.

Nobody is getting out of this life alive anyway, and I have lived most of mine already. If I guess wrong, so be it.

I have file cabinets with electronics in them. No aluminum tape, just closed. If they don't survive an EMP then I just keep on going. Gonna miss the couple of wind up shortwave radios but anyways.

I did something similar. I have a large 6 ft tall steel cabinet I bought from Sam's club 14 years ago. Tossed some radios etc in there. Certainly not a proper Faraday cage, but it was easy to do. Maybe it helps a little.

Yeah but do you have a hardware telephone PBX? I can do the same thing with Asterisk and a commodity PC but anyone in 1500 feet of me with have telephone. Actualy not a bad idea to set up Asterisk and have VOIP clients stored for Android and IOP. If you can relay the signal than you can have phone service for any number of people.

Better fire it up and reform the caps. Just run it through a variac and start at about 40 volts. After an while, crank it up a bit. Keep going in steps until you reach line voltage.
