Re: Having panic/anxiety attacks every time I get behind the wheel to drive? How to get rid of this???
Have always dealt with anxiety my entire life.

Panic attacks started around 2019.

This past month they have been intense and occurring almost daily.

And now they happen every time I drive.

Not on any medication.

CBD gummies have helped some.

I am definitely an empath.

These attacks are wearing me down physically and mentally. Every moment feels like an OOB experience. The feelings of derealization and depersonalization are crazy.

What can help fix this?

Re: Having panic/anxiety attacks every time I get behind the wheel to drive? How to get rid of this???
First, accept that the panic is there, and make peace with it being an experience you are having.
A lot of times, Anxiety and panic are exacerbated over time, because we get wired to dread the panic itself because we know that being in physiological anxiety means a loss of control.
The underlying fear is almost always the fear of loss of control, so it is very normal and understandable that these symptoms are happening, especially in these times.

To address it, there are multiple things you will need to do:
1. come up with a few affirmations you can repeat to yourself while it is happening. They should be something like "I'm okay" "I'm addressing this feeling, and whatever I feel is fine" I know this can sound hokey, but you are re-wiring your subconscious thoughts, and to do that, you start with manually re-directing your conscious thoughts.
2. Find immediate ways to cope, like using uber, to take off the immediate pressure. You can then address the situation without anxiety caused by a sense of urgency to change it.
3. Find someone in your life who you can trust, who can commit to helping you, and who can physically be with you as you address the situation that causes the anxiety. Tell this person all about what you are going through, and come up with a plan to experience it in a way that feels more safe. This would look like, planning to drive a route where it would be easy to pull over. If you pull over, your friend knows to ask you a set of questions, or knows to switch seats and take over driving. You need to create a safe "out" so you can have the experience while re-wiring the thoughts that have connected to the fear. Exposure is important in the process.

I posted earlier about you perhaps having vertigo.

Does watching this video which was just posted on the volano thread make you have anxiety? Feel a bit dizzy?

How about going up an open staircase, like on a weather tower?

I had this problem for a few years. You become too focused (hyper-arousal) and concerned about things that might happen (anxiety) that you FORGET TO BREATHE. Low/inadequate oxygen can cause panic attacks. Try to focus on breathing before you put it into drive, and get into the habit of focused breathing while on the move. It'll fix your problem fast. And keep taking CBD: helped me out too, but it's not even necessary after a while.

Do you have any idea why you feel anxious driving? If you are consciously expect the anxiety at any point, the anxiety will be there for sure. fearing it, you r inviting it.
I cured my anxiety by RELAXING and trying to enjoy instead of dreading something like driving for example. You are the boss of your mind and body, so don't give away your power to fear.

Re: Having panic/anxiety attacks every time I get behind the wheel to drive? How to get rid of this???
Drive faster, you wont have enough time to get the attacks and adrenaline helps in a way ;)... Anyway, I've had similar but since I have to drive my family around, I somehow manage to control it. Only had one case when I simply had to pull over to calm down. However for me it's not about driving as such, rather the not fully identified and fucked up symptoms that I have (possibly Lyme), like strange asthma-like sensations in my chest, the skin on my ankles moving up and down, or sinus-related sensations. I know it's hard to relax... but just relax, focus on driving itself, not on other drivers and cars. Sure I hate getting stuck in jams, but I love driving, try to enjoy the activity itself without paying much attention to others.

Go to a therapist who specializes in things like generalized anxiety disorder and PTSD. Ask them to teach you some calming techniques. Until then, search reputable websites for calming techniques.

Having difficulty traveling, moving forward, may represent your fear of the future, the unknown, what may be around the corner that you have no way to control.

Firstly, make sure you are getting enough nutrients, including magnesium, and sleep, create a special time for yourself just to relax, take a nice hot bath, listen to beautiful music. Know that movement forward is the way. It moves stale, dead energy, it breaks through barriers of constricting thought.

Your car represents independence, freedom to go our and explore and re-connect with Society. It is a vehicle that you put to good use; taking pets to vets, dining out, groceries, shopping, visiting family and friends. It keep you warmth and dry and safe.

You are the driver. You are in control. You're OKAY.

Think of all the people you will smile to and converse with as you step back out into the world, and you are never alone, and if you need extra encouragement call upon your guides and angels to hold your hand and help you meet this challenge.

You're going to be okay.

I've been getting this too - ok, what helps me is 1/2 of a 1 milligram Klonapin pill (ask your MD) / it isn't much fun to take- except it will eliminate that panic attack. If you cannot get that - then take 1 dramamine (the kind that makes you sleepy). It has a similar effect. You really should be able to get that RX - take someone WITH you to the MD appointment (to advocate on your behalf).

Re: Having panic/anxiety attacks every time I get behind the wheel to drive? How to get rid of this???
First, you might want to find out if something is wonky in your body…make sure your body is well, basically. There are medical conditions that mimic anxiety, and even having had anxiety all your life, you may not realize the difference if it lurked into your daily experience.

Second, whether you believe in God or not, prayer may help. Even if you do take up prayer, get to a doctor to rule anything life-threatening out, especially so you don’t endanger others on the road if something is amiss.

Low dose beta blocker works great. Removes the physical symptoms of anxiety/panic and allows you to resolve your mental symptoms without feeling like you're dying. Lexapro or wellbutrin works great for the mental side but can take a few weeks to start working.

OP I posted two FREE resources. Don’t take Klonopin or some other shit meds. Definitely agree with magnesium though, most people are deficient.

Magnesium L-Threonate is specifically recommended for anxiety.

Re: Having panic/anxiety attacks every time I get behind the wheel to drive? How to get rid of this???
I have had similar issues with driving for about 15 years. 99% of the roads here are rural 2-lanes and people drive like crap. They are all over the road. It is the oncoming traffic that terrifies me.

I drive a small car and if I got hit by somebody driving an F-350 I wouldn't stand a chance. It has become worse over the years. There have been times I have had to pull over and calm down.

The only places I go are to the grocery store or Home Depot. They open at 6 AM, so I leave home about 5:30 and take the back roads when there is very little traffic. I am usually done at the store and on my way home by 6:30 before most of the commuters hit the road.

It is becoming quite limiting. If I go somewhere with my wife, she drives and I stare out the side window so I don't have to see the oncoming traffic.

One of the reasons I retired about 3 1/2 years ago is so that I wouldn't have to drive to work every day.

Jesus Christ is the only way to Salvation.
1 Corinthians 1611 AV KJ Bible
Chapter 15
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Re: Having panic/anxiety attacks every time I get behind the wheel to drive? How to get rid of this???
I suffered from anxiety from the time I was a kid. I would go into the cafeteria at school and feel like I was going to pass out. I would drive and feel like I was going to pass out. I would freak standing next to a high window. A couple of times in crowded places I even did pass out. I never told my family about my panic, but of course they knew I was a worrier and a perfectionist. Yet, they just assumed I was sick with a bug, which was why I passed out, and didn't give it any more thought because I was overall very healthy.

So, in high school and college I decided I wasn't going to put up with that shit from myself any longer. I started acting and joined choir at school, I took up public speaking, made myself drive in large cities, forced myself to stand at the edge of buildings and cliffs. Anything I was bad at or uncomfortable with, I determined to cure myself from it or overcome that weakness.

Now, I speak to crowds regularly, live in the mountains, and drive in Atlanta all the time. Just don't give in. Your strengths can be stronger than your weaknesses. If you are sitting there worrying about passing out or freaking out you probably will. Just push those feelings aside and MAKE yourself think about something else. Everybody else is OK doing it so you will be, too - your anxiety isn't real or legitimate! It took a lot of singing and open car windows in the winter while learning to drive in traffic. It took a lot of forcing myself to talk to people in crowds so that I could be more comfortable. I had to make myself think I enjoyed performing. People who know me know think I am totally laid back and that nothing bothers me.

It may not be anything "wrong" with you.

I am a delivery driver, I drive all day- the driving has gotten insanely bad these last few months. I see accidents on the daily.

The "panic" you are having may be the very understandable "panic" a person has realizing they are entering into a potentially lethal situation, like standing on the ledge of a cliff.

I understand how dangerous driving is, I figure this will probably be how i die, but the panic factor goes down significantly when you come to terms with death and realize it would be a blessed relief to how much TPTB have made life sucks now.
