God’s Will is never changed, but Charity in the form of prayers is to show obedience and generosity of spirit toward God Himself, as in “Love thy neighbor as thyself” Mark 12:31

The effort isn’t for naught. God is outside of space and time, so these things were very likely already factored in. In event of a person’s death if prayed for, they are more likely to be given the opportunity to attain Heaven. The Commandments weren’t so much for others, though it’s not good to cause someone to break any Commandment or to sin, but rather the Commandments and the following them in such a disordered world, since the Original Sin of Adam and Eve, are part of how we give glory to God while here on Earth.

So you might be asking the wrong question, as it would not be how many, it would be why? Which I have answered.
