Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
Is it really because you cant make bomb material from it?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77523900

Thorium reactors are a way to use up lots of radioactive waste and turn it into energy. But not its not a breeder reactor. So you cant make bomb material that way.

But instead of storing radioactive material in some mountain deep underground you can use it for fuel in a thorium reactor.

you cant make bombs out of atomic energy whats your point?

Thorium doesn't decay into plutonium. hence no bomb making products. There are plenty of videos on Thorium MSR(molten salt reactors) they are amazing, intrinsically safe machines.

Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
Probably the same reason we don’t have cold fusion yet. The US power companies have spent so much money on conventional reactors, they refuse to scrap them until every last second of useful life has been squeezed out of them.
Any sarcasm in this post is purely intentional.

dream on. to make electricity you need to boil water to make steam then the steam needs to spin a turbine. there is no way that a steam boiler, turbine, and electric generator setup will be "almost no maintenance". unless you really enjoy explosions and fires

You need to watch, read some materials about molten salt reactors

you don't seem to know anything about nuclear tech

Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
Thanks to WW2 we have a uranium economy.

Actually if you look at the energy neede spin up the centerfuges to concentrate the uranium current nuclear plants are just batteries storing off peak power.

Thorium softballs in their reactors are safe. Those little trailer make great central heating plants.

When will you guys get out of the steam age?

Start there with your power problems.

We could have clean energy systems but people in power keep them under wraps. We have laws like the Invention Secrecy Act that keep power generation devices classified. They dont want to rock the economic boat and give people access to unlimited power.

maybe you should explain how molten salt reactors produce electricity without using steam and turbines and generators. or you could explain how steam boilers, turbines, and electric generators suddenly don't need maintenance because the reactor is fueled by thorium.

you can watch a million youtube videos, you won't change the basic engineering fact that steam and boilers are dangerous and need maintenance

Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
because from here on out your standard of living is meant to decrease with a technological sheen of sophistication to pad the fall.

we are meant to live in state housing, giant, monolithic, soulless concrete husks - the apex of ugliness and efficiency.

this way the housing, that you don't own, will be - "furnished" - with all the internet of things appliances, including smart toilets that analyze your poop for traces of a human beings metabolism. These are the "conveniences" you will be supplied with - that you cannot disable or destroy, because they are private property, and you have no right to privacy.

At the time we were working on them in the 70's they stopped all the funding for Molten Salt Reactors and instead funded Fast Breeder Reactor program.

The Fast Breeder Reactors are used to get weapons grade material. At that time it was the cold war so they were just interested in bombs.

Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
because our nuke tech is 70 years old. and owned by big companys who like money.

a different big company would get thorium.
current big companys who run the govts don't like that.

Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
Actually China already has a MSR going and they plan on making a big one.

There are a few countries / companies working on Thorium and MSR's now. The guy who runs the TED talks is a big investor in a company called Thorcon and they are making large reactors too.

Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
It's completely feasible yes

and probably the future of energy, will be molten salt reactor

small size, not pressurised water, safe

managed by private companies

Like probably container size molten salt reactor

Instead of having one big risky nuclear plot

it will be many small reactors, with almost no maintenance changing the thorium fuel once every 10/20 years

something like that
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80298875

this, us army had large thorium battery powered test vehicles back in late 50s early 60s, but tech was not good enough then for small batteries, even though apparently one of those bigbatteries would last 50000 years, or so i read

You put in some Uranium 233 to give a boost of fissile material. That gets them going.

Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
Thorium is safer than any other fuel and it's cheaper

Putting more in than you get out is a damn lie

The truth is that the rich and shameless can't make enough out of it.... like Teslas' free energy

We are close to everyone on OUR planet saying

"ENOUGH IS ENOUGH"!!!
"We each have the key to our own freedom", "it's in the way we act
and think"!

Re: Why are thorium reactors not feasible?
The reason we are not using Thorium reactors now is because we have a tall stack of people problems which are holding us back.

The energy cartel is comfortable in their position and they dont want to rock the boat. They are setup right now with generational wealth for their family and they dont want the economy to move to thorium and change that.
