Good luck man. My DOC wasn't alcohol but can say I absolutely know the demon of which it is. If I can shake a 10 year meth addiction on my own you surely can shake the sauce.

You start to feel alive and like yourself once again once you break the chains of addiction. You don't realize it fully right now but you will.

Keep your head straight, surround yourself with compassionate people and learn to forgive yourself. Everyone's road looks different but it's all the same in the end.

You'll be and do just fine if you want it. Don't be afraid to reach out to like minded if you need, hell, slide into my DM here if you need.

You're not alone homie..

From the bottom of my heart I Wish you good luck. It took me six months in rehab to get over my alcohol addiction. The best advice I can give to you is after rehab go to AA 90 times in 90 days. Good luck man tomorrow is the hardest day and it gets easier every day after.

Absolutely agree with this. 90 meetings in 90 days changed my life so drastically that five years later people are legitimately amazed I was able to turn around my life so drastically, let alone survive.

I had tried unsuccessfully a few times to quit booze myself. But it was not until submission to the Higher Power and 90 meetings in 90 days did I finally crack the code.
Quoting: One Small Ask: Burn a Mask.

I recommend this to everyone. It’s actually a great place to meet folks who actually care and can help. No Matter where I am when I walk into the AA rooms I feel like I’m coming home. When I worked at Yellowstone going to AA meetings was the only thing that kept me off the booze and when I went across the country I would make sure to hit a meeting up in every city. One of the best parts about the meetings is that no matter what city or state you’re in or even country it has the same slogans in the same mottos and prayers that work.

It took me a while to complete my step 2,maybe years. So I suggest taking your time when completing the steps and in the meantime just pray pray pray. Get into a habit of leaving your wallet under the bed so that when you wake up one of the first things you do is get down on your knees. My higher power isn’t exactly the Christian God, but something so personally tailored towards my life. Please findThe strength to make this recovery last. The only difference between me and a normal person is one drink. The only thing I like more than one drink is 12. It’s not your fault, but with a little help life can be so much better. Thank you for helping me realizeTonight that I need to do more step 12 and help those who are still sick and suffering.

Re: I'm going to rehab tomorrow....
Hey, OP. I've got a couple of questions if you don't mind.

Why do you drink? Do you like the taste of liquor is does it help with some emotional issues?

What is your drink of choice, beer, wine, or hard liquor, or does any liquor fit the bill?

How old were you when you took your first drink?

It has always puzzled me why folks suffer from addictions, whether from drugs, booze, porn, sex or whatever. There must be some biological/mental reason for the behavior. But it is no worse than someone who plays a guitar for twelve hours a day and thinks he's not addicted to it.

OP, I hope you can go into rehab and find the reasons you like to drink. Maybe once that question is answered you can find closure and begin a new life full of happiness and contentment. Remember, it's not an addiction unless you over indulge. A beer a day does not make someone a drunk in my book. A bottle of JD a day and I begin to raise an eyebrow.

God bless you, OP. I will say a prayer for you complete and total reformation of the drinking situation in your life.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79660464

People do stuff because it makes them feel good. Even feeling bad can make a person feel good. A physical explanation is that it affects the feel good neurotransmitters like dopamine. Drinking alcohol initially releases serotonin also which is another neurotransmitter involved in feeling happy and calm. Alcohol also increases the effects of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

So the key is finding something healthy to be addicted to that doesn’t harm a person. Like playing guitar that you mentioned. Or helping others. Taking a dog for a walk every day. But not to the extreme. Find a balance.

Re: I'm going to rehab tomorrow....
I think and this is just a theory about people who have a problem with alcohol. The problem is hypoglycemia, it is similar to diabetes except it is low sugar instead of high sugar. A person who has hypoglycemic craves the sugar continent of alcohol, and so they keep drinking. Their body memory will make them crave alcohol.

With checking in ask for five snacks a day like nuts and peanut crackers, it helps hypoglycemia, if you have ever got a strange shaking in your body and didn't understand why it is a symptom of hypoglycemia. It can cause anger for no reason at all except it is because your nerves are straining under the effects of low blood sugar. My husband had the problem really bad; he would get so bad he tore his pant from the seams. I research to find help and the snacks was the biggest help I found, one other thing helps as crazy as it may seem, one small bottle of coke cola works fast if you can't get any peanut butter crackers, it brings your sugar up fast in a hurry if you didn't keep your snacks on you.

It is worth trying, no guarantees it may help and I hope it does.

Low blood sugar can do all those things. It’s one piece of the puzzle. Keeping a good diet is a very good idea. Their gut health is probably shot so work on that. Get addicted to healthy living.

I went to rehab in East New York.

Most of you don't know what that means.

It was a bunch of black ex convicts

I was the one white guy there.

They were good to me they were good people..

Needless to say it didn't work,. ..
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 80014312

Rehab has a very high failure rate because you almost need a spiritual conversion to stay sobor. I am not saying you need to be religious. But you almost need to believe their is a higher power that is guiding you.

Other than that you have to get away from alcohol for a good while to get it out of your system, so the cravings don't dog you so much. Then you are going to need all new habits to distract you form the thought. I would not hang out with other alcoholics.

AA is not a treatment program. It is a faith healing one with a super high failure rate. Because it is about baiting you than switching the narrative. It goes from not your fault for being an alcoholic, to it's totally your fault if you can't stick to their very "simple" program.. BS! Turns out talking to other alcoholic about alcohol, often triggers more drinking because of the hyper focus. Not the other way around as AA would have you believe. [link to aorange1.tripod.com (secure)]

Anyways eat lot of fresh vegetable daily. Naltrexone is actually based off chemicals found in vegetables. It also why in the old todays hospitals and homeless shelters fed the alcoholics lots of vegetable soup. If you are getting your daily servings of vegetables you are less likely to drink so much alcohol. Stay away from grains and starches. It triggers alcoholic cravings. So, if you are starting to crave it, go eat a bunch of vegetables first.

Another thing. Do not be hard on yourself. Most people that drink alcohol had had spells in their life when they drank too much to often for a periods of time. It is a sign that you self soothing a difficult time in your life. All you can do is try to figure out what that thing is and be brave enough to change it. Furthermore, most people just get sick and tired of being sick and tired. They learn to set up rules about alcohol, and then keep track of when what they are consuming in not acceptable anymore.

So they don't shun alcohol altogether and then feel bad latter about it. They accept it as part of how they do life.

Another thing stop calling yourself an alcoholic if you are not actively getting drunk so often. That is damaging to your self esteem. That is like a person that was fat losing the weight and still calling themselves fat. Or an ex smoker, still calling themselves a smoker. No, you just have or did have an alcohol abuse problem.

AA is uses the old con of once a sinner / alcoholic always a sinner or an alcoholic, and only Jesus/ AA can redeem you. That is total BS meant to steel your independents and self control from you. What you need is just time away form the substance and a plan to take back your life. You probably could have moved to a dry county in Texas or other parts of the USA to do it. Getting a job (probably on a farm/ ranch) in a dry county would have kept you busy too. No internet and limited TV and you could have planned how to reorganize your life. No stigma either.

Anyways idle time is your enemy. So stay busy. Good luck.
 Quoting: My Fear

So if you fall off the horse you get back on. AA will always have you back. Spending time with others who are struggling helps too. And a higher power does also.

Everything will be okay. So stop worrying so much.

BTW...

You can stop any time you choose to take control.

So stop handing control over to desires and own yourself.
