if you look at the paper, GFAP is one of 181 'Differentially Expressed Proteins' that they look at, including NEFL (Neurofilament light), UCH-L1 and others too.

It seems they do some sort of correlation analysis to match the signatures of these proteins (whether upregulated or downregulated) to varous diseases - and in table 2 it correlates strongly to Parkinson's, Neuropathy, Alzheimer's, Motor Neurone (ALS), Dementia ....
