How exactly do we flake off pieces of our silver to pay for stuff when SHTF? | |

Most people don't know this but you can actually use a potato as a crucible with a propane torch. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79661727 Not the best way but certainly doable. Thank you! I had never heard about the potato as a crucible. Very interesting! I found a short video on how it’s done. Nice! |

(OP) User ID: 69862135 United States 10/25/2021 09:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | No one will trade silver for food or ammo in an SHTF situation. You might trade them on the Black Market which will surely develop, for pennies on the dollar at that time but it won't be as a typical matter of trade for a very long time after. Quoting: nacho daddy The reasons being, that no one can be sure of the purity, for one. You can't eat it and outside the black street corner market, very few will want it to begin with. The hype put out by the sellers is BS. You would only be able to exchange it at places not likely to even exist anymore, at that time. It is very likely that mass food shortages, civil disruption, and ultimately an economic collapse of the society essentially the same as in Venezuela will occur. Better to stock up on beans and bullets, so to speak. Then YOU can be the guy who can offer a pound of beans for an ounce of silver, instead of the other way around. Good word. I’m trying to have a little bit of it all. Beans. Bullets. And Silver. |

Quoting: Sandman1! But the value will be much less. What will a bic lighter a wool blanket a tarp be worth? You will barter and trade. Did cowboys pay for their whiskey at the saloon by trading booze for bullets "A SHOT". I will never take another shot of whiskey without thinking about your “cowboys trading booze for bullets” comment again. Very cool. |

Sure hope it will come in handy someday. If all you got is a few small silver coins, that ain't shit for the long haul you'd be better of investing in lead and body armor I am well diversified. Minding my own business, been saving for a rainy day, and I have valuable skills even if the lights go out. I’m ready. |

It's a manufacturing resource, but if there's no demand it will become useless too... Quoting: BRIEF Silver and other precious metals are useful in manufacturing and hightech applications. If nobody is producing semiconductor chips or circuit boards. I'd rather have a stock of tool steel, or aluminum. Both require alot of energy to make. |

People who know how to grow or hunt their food, will also surely accept valuable silver for a portion of their food. Silver (and gold) will ALWAYS be accepted for essential goods, unless the ground no longer can produce food, or wild animals completely cease to exist. I will happily sell a can of tuna or cup of rice for several ounces of silver after SHTF. |

This scripture actually proves gold and silvers value up until the second coming. Also, can you point to any time in history where silver was worthless? |

The FACT is that chicks want it because it's shiny and pretty and will far more easily put out for some. It's also symbolic of status and security which they're driven to seek out. This was noticed long before there was any high tech bullshit requiring especially electrically conducive metals. The possession of gold and silver and other rare sparkly baubles got you first dibbie's to snatch from prehistory onward. |

HA HA, if you are armed you will probably have to shoot off street people and the make yourself a target there is NO person-to-person bartering during a real SHTF situation If you don't think so , try to street barter right now during the "good times" and see how far you get... |

The scored coin can then be broken down to pay for the purchase and the seller gets thue added reassurance that it's good silver. It was common throughout the Americas at one time. |

Your corner grocery will never accept silver for food. They just are not set up to do so. Maybe the grocery manager might make a side deal but the market...no. You will only be able to exchange your silver at places that buy and sell it...assuming they still exist at that time. If it is not ASE's, forget about it..there is no way to assure purity and you will get next to nothing for it. In a dystopian society that will emerge from the rubble of an SHTF, beans and bullets will rule the day. You would be lucky to get crumbs for your silver because whoever controls the food, water, and security will set the exchange rate for silver in their immediate area. The day the soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership. |
