Isaiah 14:12 - Why I believe that Lucifer refers to Mercury and not to Venus
Perhaps not overly important in rhetorical presentation, but possibly very important for historical verification and analysis. I don't believe that Venus fits the historical events, or even the Babylonian cosmo-concept at all.

The kings of the Neo-Babylonian empire took names after the god of Wisdom, Nabu. Nabu is the planet we know as Mercury, or what the Greeks called Apollo in its morning star transit and Hermes in its evening star transit.

The fall of Babylon, we know from the Babylonian chronicle, was on the night of the full moon October 10, 539 BC during the feast to the moon good Sin. The sun is in the sign of Libra, or the Scales. However, one important detail here is that it is also the last day of Mercury retrograde. Mercury retrograde ended at 23:36 local Iraq time in Babylon that night. This was just about the time Persian forces had sneaked in through the water fords and were taking the city. Babylon was sacked that very night.

Venus (Ishtar) never was ascribed to the kings of Babylon. Though they honored Ishtar as a goddess, she was not the patron of kings as was Nabu. Nebuchadnezzar means 'may Nabu protect my eldest'. The kings of Babylon often had Nabu within their names and liked to consider themselves inspired by this god of Wisdom and Science in overseeing the empire and constructing great cities and culture. They liked to think of themselves as society builders. Therefore, Mercury would fit much better in describing the character and person of the kings of Babylon.

Astrologically, Mercury fits the prophecy as well as Mercury not only came out of retrograde, but began moving back toward the sun and then finally behind the sun to phase into its aspect of evening star Hermes. In astrological terms, Mercury (Nabu) began to 'fall' that night.

29Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

30In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. 31And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

Isaiah is giving a direct astrological parable (parallel) as a sign in the heavens of the fall of the king of Babylon.

In order for it to fit, all pieces of the 'story' must fit. Venus is doing nothing like this during this time but is off in Virgo without aspect.

Mercury, however, does fit the king of Babylon not only as the king of Babylon was seen as the earthly avatar of Nabu, but as importantly because we have a direct astrological parallel between the transit of Mercury at the fall of Babylon and the parable of Isaiah 14.

The transit is common even in our modern times.

For example, we just recently experienced the parallel to the fall of Lucifer in the Balance when Mercury came out of retrograde and now is falling back toward the sun on October 18 when the sun first entered Libra at 0 degrees Spica.

It is not the commonality of the transit that is important, but rather it is important to understand its portent.

The Nabonidus Chroncle tablet, part of the greater Babylonian Chronicle, records the taking of Babylon on Tashritu 16 in the 17th year of Nabonidus.

That would be Saturday October 10, 539 BC in the Julian calendar and Saturday October 4, 539 BC in the Gregorian calendar.

Ptolemy offers a glimpse in his Tetrabiblos concerning Chaldean concepts of the relative powers of planets when in either occidental or oriental aspect.

Occidental planets are those that rise/set after the sun.
Oriental planets are those that rise/set before the sun.

When Mercury is direct and transiting upward in oriental aspect, he would be at his most powerful. However, when transiting back toward occidental, he would be in diminution, or 'fallen'.

Lucifer (Heb. helel) means 'shining one'. Phaethon means 'shining one'. There is little doubt that the legend of Phaethon attempting to drive the sun chariot and being struck down by Zeus is a much latter Greek adaptation of an older Mesopotamian myth with similar motifs.

There is no spirit named 'Lucifer'. There is no angel named 'Lucifer'. Such concepts are latter interpolations and errors born of ignorance and superstition. Isaiah is speaking in purely mocking and Akkadian legend terms that would readily be understood by his contemporaries in order to communicate an astrological parable about the coming fall of the king of Babylon and the Babylonian empire.

The only 'Lucifer' (helel) that ever has, or ever will exist by means of parabolic language is Nabar/Nabonidus Belshazzar the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar. And the sign of his fall in heaven was Mercury (Nabu) coming out of retrograde and beginning to fall back behind the sun in occidental aspect on the day Babylon was sacked -- October 10, 539 BC.
