The thing is you can't interpret everything in the Bible literally. So we wouldn't know whether it will be 7 years and what marks the start
For example the Bible says after satan and the false prophet and their worshipers are tossed into the lake of fire, the ocean will be no more. Heck does that mean the earth will be as dry as Mars? Does that sound like a good planet to live on?
