When a supernova has exploded it's normal that the stars to disappear. I don't see any other "natural" reasons other that a SN explosion.

There are up to 400 billion stars in the milky way. We could be way off on that too - could be trillions. 700 missing is about as important as shedding a ball hair in the shower.

There are only 5,000 - 9,000 stars visible to the naked eye.

I don't know if the 700 figure is taken from the unaided eye count.
