Thousands of demonstrators protesting against the Victorian government’s pandemic legislation have gathered outside State Parliament, as two separate protests disrupted traffic in Melbourne’s CBD.

In the largest of the two rallies, over 1000 protesters marched down Bourke Street to Parliament House on Spring Street just after 12pm on Saturday, with shouts of “free Victoria” and “Sack Dan Andrews”.

The new pandemic-specific laws, which are set to replace state-of-emergency powers when they expire on December 15, curtail the chief health officer’s powers, giving the Premier authority to declare a pandemic and the health minister the role of making public health orders.

With protests now legal again, police monitored the crowd, but only moved people on if they were blocking traffic. However, at times, the large crowds brought traffic in the CBD to a standstill.

Victorian Greens MP Tim Read urged the crowd to push their local members for more urgent action on climate change ahead of the next federal and state election.

“Net zero is bullshit… we need ambition, we need to go further,” he said.

The crowd joined organisers in chanting, “Scott Morrison go f--- yourself” and “we’ve got a climate fix, tax, tax, tax the rich”.
