I came to the idea decades ago that reincarnation was rejected as a solid universal fact by the wise men of the day because it would provide an incentive for people to act out their baser instincts including murder and would encourage many to do evil with the idea they could pay the price in their next incarnation.

I always assumed that hell was our previous plane of existence, earth is our current and heaven is the next level of existence. Our souls spend several lifetimes in various unconscious beings before gaining conciousness in human form (thus no memory but only a feeling of before) and after the death of this body will we either recycle or move up. I dont think their is a "divine judgment" or some angry god looking at us but god is a living energy that encapsulates the entirety of the cosmos.
