In Maori mythology, taniwha [tanifa] are large supernatural beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or deceptive breakers (giant waves). They may be considered highly respected kaitiaki (protective guardians) of people and places, or in some traditions as dangerous, predatory beings, which for example would kidnap women to have as wives. They show her what they think of her about half way into the video at the demonstration outside parliament. . Are they representative of the majority of their people? I fucking hope so! They should demand that that creature who 'rules' over them should show itself, and they should then meet out instant justice. Good to see that level of resistance but I don't think the Nag in charge gives two shits. They'll have to go Clockwork Orange and do some 'ultraviolence' or they'll just be ignored. |

I've had a few Moari friends, and pretty sure if you ask any of them they'll say "I'm the hairy man!". From what I've garnered over the years, the Haka really is about confidence in self, confidence in brothers and striking fear in their enemy. It's effectively referencing an "impossible task", anchoring confidence in achieving against overwhelming odds, and triumphing (making it shine). Never heard the Haka was referencing any deity... though I'd be interested to hear from a NZ'er on the matter, if there's any around? The bigger the global population, the more solutions available to us all. |
