Had to put a deer down the other night
I was driving on a rural county highway up here headed for a larger state highway around dusk. 1/4 behind a pickup truck the whole way when he signaled to turn onto the on ramp of the state highway, he hit the brakes hard and stopped. I ended up 10 yards behind him when he suddenly backed up and took off onto the on ramp.

In the road was a young buck with 8" stubs for a rack. He was flopping around like a fish, but clearly not going to make it. Both front legs were broken and he was bleeding from his mouth. Another truck pulled up behind me and out came an old farmer who said it needed to be put down. He asked if I had a gun in my "rig" ( I was driving a mini van :) )

I had my conceal carry on me, which I don't always have (but wore this time because I am trying to wear in a new holster).
I put the deer down with 1 shot to the temple and he was gone within a few seconds.

I don't hunt, although everyone around me does including the old farmer. We loaded the deer into his truck and he took it home to process immediately.

I felt sick to my stomach for an hour and had to park and wait it out. I know it's all part of life and I'm glad the farmer could make good use of it right away. Just made for a bad night.

It's hard to put down an animal. I'll never get used to it.

You did a good thing though, putting that beautiful animal out of it's misery. I know it doesn't feel that way, but you did the right thing.

I agree and thanks.

In a few weeks there will be just under 1/2 million people out with rifles crawling the woods around the state. I know it's part of life, just wasn't expecting to be doing that in the road that night I guess.

Thanks for replying

Re: Had to put a deer down the other night
People need to drive slower. I see all kinds of dead animals on the side of the road. There's no excuse for it. I have only only hit one animal that I can remember, which was a large deer, but I came to a complete stop first and it jumped on my hood. It ran away with no injuries.

Honestly, I really hope the vaccine or something takes out several billion of us. Most humans are complete trash.

I agree people should be more careful, but up here it's mating season now and they are everywhere. On top of that it was late dusk/dark and I didn't even know why he slammed on the brakes (because I didn't even see it from way back where I was).

Trust me, that deer did a number to his nice truck I'm sure and he likely didn't have a chance to react. Just weird he didn't even get out to inspect.

Unless you want to remove driving all together, animals are going to get hit, especially in mating season.

Why would you even write that when the OP quite obviously stated that the farmer took the meat to be processed?

Seeing them laying on the side of the highway is horrible, hunting is conservation. Without removing deer every year through hunting conservation your cars front end would need replaced frequently.

Did my part today took a 8 point buck today, passed a spike and wanted a doe but the buck answered my call.

You did the right thing. I just had a person I went to school with post a video of dispatching a deer that was shot and suffering. I expected to see him shoot it of course. What did he do? Slit it's throat. I was like WTF.
