I don't pretend to know for certain, but here's my take on this ^^^

Yes, God could have snapped His fingers and eliminated Satan from existence immediately. But as a lesson to the universe, he allowed Satan to make his case, as to what things would be like with HIM as "god" on earth, since Satan's aim is to be "like the Most High".

Satan painted God as a "tyrant" to the other angels including the ones who bought into it, and were cast down with him. So for God to instantly eliminate Satan, or anyone accusing him of being a "tyrant", just might get other angels to thinking there might just be some validity to the charge.

Instead, God was not only fair about it, but wise, as well.

Now, people might think, "Why would God allow thousands of years of this insanity to go on?" But according to the bible, a thousand years is like a "day" unto God. God is not slack concerning His promises.

So in essence, this "theater" of the universe has only been going on for 6 days (on God's timeline), and the 7th day (thousand year millennium) will be a "day of rest" for the earth, after the Second Coming.

Do I know any of this for a fact? No, but I base my opinion on 30+ years of dedicated Bible study.
