I had a dream three nights ago I could see meteors falling from the sky (or I thought they were meteors at the time - it some sort of debris).

Two fell near the doorstep where I was. I looked up at the sky and could see things falling in clusters (like 2, 3, 4 falling together at a time). I said, "We better go back inside. If some fell here, more may come..."

Not true. There are several companies that want the clean-up job. Also, several countries have janitor satellites. Japan has a satellite that attaches to a derelict satellite and kamikazes in.

This debris is in a very low earth orbit. It shouldn’t affect satellites in higher orbits. It could, but it’s unlikely.

GPS is in MEO and shouldn’t be affected. Most communication satellites and military are at GEO, some are in Molniya or polar orbits. The highly elliptical orbiting satellites may have trouble navigating through the debris cloud.

The new constellations in LEO like StarLink may have issues. Many climate satellites are in LEO.

If this cascades in LEO it could create a huge mess.

Worst case is if a satellite in a highly elliptic orbit gets hit it could spray debris all over, across many orbits.

If I had to make a devil vs blue sea choice and rid the planet of Starlink, WAR FROM SPACE, this vaxx passport everywhere in the world enabled by satcom, if it meant getting rid of every satelite, and ability to leave earth orbit for a long long time, I'd choose KESSLER.

We remove space junk all the time by driving satellites into the atmosphere or parking them out of the way.

I knew a guy that worked at a gov site that tracked space debris (this was decades ago) and he stated that even an astronaut's glove out in space could be disastrous if it hit certain objects in orbit.

Yes, Russia has cosmonauts there, however they do not care about them, just look back at their space program and see how many they killed using crappy space capsules, rockets etc.

Yup. SPACECOM tracks them all. However, they don’t track most of the junk and debris. There is something like 600,000 objects we put up there or created by crashing and blowing shit up. One of the nastiest is the radioactive coolant the Russians sprayed out of their satellites. It froze and created a bunch of 1cm radioactive balls all over the place.

The new generation of communication satellite constellations are putting up tens of thousands of satellites. We should just make a ring at GEO.
