China and Russia have effectively abandoned their responsibilities as permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, an organ responsible for world peace. The dysfunction and impotence of the council is a loss for the entire international community.

The UNSC voted on a draft resolution to strengthen sanctions against North Korea. Thirteen of the 15 council members voted in favor of the resolution, but it did not pass after China and Russia exercised their veto. This is the first time the veto has been used for a Security Council resolution on North Korea’s nuclear and missile development.

This can be said to be symbolic of the current state of affairs in which Beijing-Moscow cooperation is deepening in all areas after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

I hope this is not deleted as it is my commentary on a different side of the current battlefield, public opinion.

The use of and methods promoting propaganda and silencing divergent views is fascinating to me, especially during the past few months.

To see new talking points introduced and spread in unison across various media, web forums, etc. and quickly go away, to be replaced by the next day's talking points. To see where and how they are sometimes bluntly used and other times in a very subtle manner.

Up until the past few months I just assumed that this was done only at the higher levels of mass media--TV, newspapers, editorials. But I've seen first hand on this and several other forums where there is very obvious intent by "someone" or some entity to either promote an agenda or stifle opposing views.

Or, to bombard a site/thread with so much bot generated content that meaningful debate is almost impossible.

I've seen different approaches by forum administrators to deal with this phenomena. None of which are perfect and makes me appreciate the challenge admins/forums face to figure out how to balance open discourse against intentional BS.

--Some require such a rigid vetting to be able to post it ends up a very one-sided discussion, an echo chamber of similarly minded individuals.

--Another, 95% of the members are of such like mind they simply push out any contrarian news or views. Self-imposed echo chamber.

---Some allow fairly open discourse with anonymous posting but those can be overwhelmed by the targeted intentional BS.

--Some have likes/dislikes, report abusive behavior or "bad" content that can then be abused to silence divergent views. On another board, there was a very long-term highly respected poster that received what appeared to be a questionable permanent ban based on being targeted.

And then there is propaganda that is delivered so cleverly we don't even realize it's someones BS. To me, that's the most dangerous--we don't even realize we are being manipulated.

I would expect to see this on the NYT's or massive forums with millions upon millions of viewers. But to see it on a rather obscure single college sports forum was a big surprise. It has been taken to even the lowest levels of discussion spaces.

I really appreciate all of those on this thread who continue to deliver excellent information and views. Like---REALLY appreciate it. Even when venom is directed in your direction. Stay the course.
