The head of the wagner group is an ally of Kadyrov, the mad chechen. Putin made Kadyrov a general yesterday.

On the one hand it's a good sign cracks are becoming gaping holes in the russian elite.

On the other hand, wagner and the kadyrovites are WAY MORE EXTREME than the current military leadership.

Even if all these elite knew...on both sides...that someone was working against them...to end the game they want to "win"...would they be able to humble themselves enough...even for a moment to negotiate?

How does the Russo-Ukrainian War end?
Sometimes you change the subject, and sometimes the subject changes you.

At first, no one could imagine that the Russo-Ukrainian war could begin. And yet it began. And now, no one can imagine how it will end. And yet end it will.

War is ultimately about politics. That Ukraine is winning on the battlefield matters because Ukraine is exerting pressure on Russian politics. Tyrants such as Putin exert a certain fascination, because they give the impression that they can do what they like. This is not true, of course; and their regimes are deceptively brittle. The war ends when Ukrainian military victories alter Russian political realities, a process which I believe has begun.

The Ukrainians, let's face it, have turned out to be stunningly good warriors. They have carried out a series of defensive and now offensive operations that one would like to call "textbook," but the truth is that those textbooks have not yet been written; and when they are written, the Ukrainian campaign will provide the examples. The have done so with admirable calm and sang-froid, even as their enemy perpetrates horrible crimes and openly campaigns for their destruction as a nation.

Right now, though, we have a certain difficulty seeing how Ukraine gets to victory, even as the Ukrainians advance. This is because many of our imaginations are trapped by a single and rather unlikely variant of how the war ends: with a nuclear detonation.

You are welcome. My imagination did jump to nuclear war as the only possible outcome right from the beginning, for me this is a bit of hope that there are potential alternative endings.

Unfortunately, we (the US) are not too far from the same situation. TPTB have relentlessly worked to separate us to the point of outright hatred. Shit, we have kids getting run over by cars because they have a different political perspective.

They continually divide us...black, white; pro-life, baby-killers; rich, poor; secure borders, illegal immigation; pro vax, anti vax; energy independence, green energy; God fearing, godless; straight, gay; women's rights, men in women's sports...if you aren't passionate about a position in one regard, they make sure to keep division in every aspect of life so that there is one group of people that you will hate. At least that is their goal.

Regardless, I'm glad to see this division between elites taking place in Russia. Nothing against the Russian people but they have been victimized by egomaniacal tyrants for far too long and I think this "special military operation" is the last straw for the common people there.

Totally agree. And not just pretend outrage with each other over politics. At the end of the day, the overwhelming majority of them serve the same master and that isn't the people the are supposed to be representing. Anyway, didn't mean to derail the excellent thread with my aside.
