Russia Planned To Attack Japan in 2021: Leaked FSB Letters

Russia was preparing to attack Japan in the summer of 2021, months before President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, an email featuring a letter from a whistleblower at Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), shared with Newsweek, reveals.

The email, dated March 17, was sent by the agent, dubbed the Wind of Change, to Vladimir Osechkin, a Russian human-rights activist who runs the anti-corruption website Gulagu.net, and is now exiled in France.

The FSB agent writes regular dispatches to Osechkin, revealing the anger and discontent inside the service over the war that began when Putin invaded neighboring Ukraine on February 24.

Igor Sushko, the executive director of the Wind of Change Research Group, a Washington-based non-profit organization, has been translating the correspondence from Russian to English since it began on March 4. He has shared all the emails in full to Newsweek, including the March 17 brief.

As Winter Sets In, Ukrainian Battlefields Shows Few Signs Of Freezing

As the first snow fell across Ukraine last week, the Ukrainian army launched an attack on Russian positions around Kreminna in a renewed — albeit so far unsuccessful — effort to retake the eastern town.

At the same time, Ukrainian special forces were reportedly pushing back Russian troops in the islands and marshes that make up the Kinburn Spit, a strategic peninsula on the left bank of the Dnipro River near annexed Crimea.


The ongoing fierce fighting on the southern and eastern fronts suggests there will be no let-up in major military operations as the weather worsens and temperatures drop below freezing — defying predictions by some observers that the conflict could slow to an end-of-year stalemate.

“I do not expect a significant decrease in Ukrainian ground operations going into winter,” said Konrad Muzyka, a defense analyst at Poland-based Rochan Consulting.

When the ground eventually freezes, it could even give Kyiv an opportunity for fresh attacks — particularly in its contested eastern regions where wet and muddy terrain is currently impassable for wheeled vehicles.

“The ideal time for a blitz in Ukraine is when the ground is frozen solid,” said William Alberque, a defense analyst at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Today, we managed to release 50 Ukrainian soldiers from Russian captivity.
Importantly, 19 Mariupol defenders are free again. 12 of them were evacuated from Azovstal. 15 prisoners captured at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and 7 at the Snake Island also came home

Russia has deployed it's best Airborne troops to Svatove-Kreminna area.

However, they did not have much luck in the Kiev campaign at the airport, so...

Interesting finding: at the time Evgeny Prigozhin was known as the "Putin chief"; if I remember it correctly, his name came out in the Panama papers as one of those who were hiding Putin's money.

Ukraine halts Russian advance in more than a dozen locations over the past day

Ukrainian forces announced Friday that they have managed to stop the advance of the Russian Army in at least eleven localities in the country during the last 24 hours, which has allowed Kiev to hold its positions in areas of Lugansk and Donetsk, mainly.
