A'powerful explosion' has rung out over the central part of the port city of Sevastopol in Crimea, sparking fears in Moscow that the small Russian-annexed land could be under threat. Sevastopol heard a "sound similar to the launch of a rocket" from within the city, according to independent journalists at Krym Realii. The Moscow-installed administrator of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, has claimed the explosion was the "downing of a drone" by Russian forces.

The Kremlin is done seizing territory from Ukraine, a Russian spokesperson said Thursday.

Russia began an aggressive mobilization in Ukraine at the start of the war on February 24, and Ukraine launched a strong counteroffensive that has mostly succeeded in pushing Russian forces from Ukrainian territories such as Kyiv, Kharkiv and Izium. Now, the Kremlin is shifting its focus back to its original goals of the "demilitarization and denazification" of Ukraine.

The price cap on Russian crude and EU's oil embargo present "new economic shocks," the Bank of Russia said.

They could "significantly reduce" Russia's economic activity in the coming months, per the bank.

Russia is mulling options to counter the price cap, including banning oil sales to some countries.



Despite the Kremlin's general skepticism over the West's myriad economic sanctions, analysts at the country's central bank foresee "new economic shocks," thanks to a $60 per barrel price cap on Russian oil and the European Union's ban of the country's crude.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov warned on Thursday about the "soaring" risks of NATO engaging with Russia over Russian President Vladimir Putin's ongoing war in Ukraine.

"NATO members are increasingly and directly involved in this conflict. Their support for Kiev is now much more diversified than it was a few months ago. This is a reflection of Washington's intentional policy, obediently pursued by the Europeans, of escalating the conflict. They are playing with fire. The risks are soaring," Ryabkov said on the Rossiya-24 TV channel, according to Russian news agency TASS.

Russian paramilitary group Wagner reportedly opens 'cultural centre' in Belgrade

Russian paramilitary group Wagner announced on December 7 it has set up a cultural and information centre in the Serbian capital Belgrade, according to T_legram messages from the organisation widely quoted by Serbian media. 

The group has been described as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s private army. It is led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian businessman and close associate of the president, nicknamed ‘Putin’s chef’. 

“We are impatient to present to you the new office of the PMC Wagner Center — ANO Russian-Serbian Cultural and Information Centre of Friendship and Cooperation, Orly,” Wagner said on the T_legram platform, according to Serbian daily Danas.

The centre's team calls its mission the implementation of public diplomacy, the aim of which is to strengthen and develop friendly relations between Russia and Serbia with the help of "soft power”.

Back in September, the United States committed to doubling the number of M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) that were being sent to Ukraine.

And now this month, the Pentagon has announced that it awarded a $430 million contract to defense and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin for the production of the missile launchers, along with support services to support the U.S. military and various Foreign Military Sales partners. This is actually the first contract for the production of additional HIMARS since April before the first of the mobile vehicles were deployed to Ukraine. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), hasn’t specified who will receive the next batch – but the platform certainly has eager buyers. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland have placed orders for the HIMARS, which could greatly enhance the artillery arsenals of those nations – all of which share borders with Russian territory. Ukraine Could Use More HIMARS
Though the HIMARS has been seen as a critical weapon in Ukraine’s efforts to liberate territory from Russia and to support its campaign against the Moscow-backed separatists in the Eastern Donbas region, more are likely needed. With only about twenty in service, the HIMARS are stretched thin given the 800 to 1,000 km (500 to 620 mile) long frontline.
