Putin admits Russia can't supply clothes to front line troops

Vladimir Putin has admitted that there have been problems procuring equipment and clothes for the hundreds of thousands of men called-up to fight in Ukraine.

Some 300,000 men were called up in the autumn as part of the Russian president’s “partial mobilisation” - but the draft has been plagued by accusations of sub-standard equipment and shortages.

Russia refused to release Paul Whelan alongside Brittney Griner unless a former colonel from Russia’s domestic spy organization currently in German custody was also released as part of any prisoner swap, US officials told CNN, even as the US offered up the names of several other Russian prisoners in US custody that they would be willing to trade.

The US was unable to deliver on the request for the ex-colonel, Vadim Krasikov, because he is serving out a life sentence for murder in Germany.

CNN first reported exclusively in August that the Russians had requested that Krasikov be released along with Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer who was serving a 25-year sentence in the US, in exchange for Whelan and Griner.

The court sentenced Yashin to 8 years and 6 months in prison for condemning the Russian army in Bucha.

So 8 months in, and having made a commitment to support and supply arms to Ukraine, no one said hey, let's step up manufacturing of what's needed?

To pull back now would be committing suicide by the west.

Oh, I definitely agree there was a lack of foresight.




Humans and human institutions often fail us.



Somehow we need to strike the best balance we can at the moment -- and our allies need to as well. Not just us.

Jailed Russian dissident: Putin’s fall ‘just around the corner’

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fall from power is “just around the corner,” according to a Russian dissident imprisoned for discussing Russia's war crimes in Ukraine.

“The court has sentenced me to 8 years and 6 months in prison,” Russian dissident politician Ilya Yashin said Friday, according to the Insider’s translation. “Well, the authors of the verdict are optimistic about Putin's prospects. Too optimistic, in my opinion.”

Yashin faced trial in Moscow pursuant to the censorship laws adopted in Russia following the launch of the war, draconian measures that stifle even state media discussion of high-profile Russian retreats. Russian officials have tried to present a positive and confident portrait of the war in Ukraine as the holiday season brings the 10th month of fighting in a “special military operation” that Russian forces were expected to win in short order.

“The SMO is going at its own pace. Everything is stable for us,” Putin insisted during a Friday press conference, according to the War Translated Project. “There are no issues or problems today.”
