For the umpteenth time in Russia’s eight-month-old wider war on Ukraine, Kyiv’s forces are in a position to surround a significant number of demoralized Russian troops. When the Ukrainians last enveloped a Russian force, around the eastern town of Lyman last week, potentially hundreds of Russians and Ukrainian separatists died.

To avoid getting trapped, the Russian paratroopers—part of Russia’s 49th Combined Arms Army—soon might face a choice. Either ford the Inhulets River on the western edge of the sector, or the Dnipro River on the southern edge.

Considering how adept the Ukrainian army has become at dropping bridges and destroying river lodgments, both options are unhappy ones for the Russians. It’s possible “the entire 49th CAA will have to find a way … to swim,” quipped Tom Cooper, an author and independent expert on the Russian military.

Ukraine’s southern counteroffensive has been months in the making. As far back as the spring, Ukrainian rocketeers, gunners and saboteurs began targeting bridges, railroads, supply dumps and command centers in and around Russian-occupied Kherson, a strategic port on the Black Sea. The deep strikes on logistics and command isolated and weakened the 49th CAA even as the Kremlin shifted forces from the east to the south in a desperate bid to shore up defenses around Kherson.

Ukraine captures Iranian drone used by Russians intact

When Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, granted Russia’s request for drone reinforcements to fight the war in Ukraine, noise complaints can’t have been high on his list of expected Ukrainian responses. And yet.

"Do you know [what] we call these Iranian drones? ‘Motorbikes’ because they [make] the same sound,” Dr. Hanna Shelest, an Odesa-based senior fellow with the Center for European Policy Analysis, chuckled as she told the Washington Examiner. “They're extremely loud. So, as for now ... that is our biggest problem.”

A series of Iranian drone attacks on Odesa have proven rather ineffective, according to Shelest. Russian forces have used a combination of Iranian “kamikaze” drones and larger Iran-provided vehicles that can conduct surveillance as well as airstrikes across the theater, but the defenders of Odesa have blunted several of the attacks, and Ukrainian forces now have published images that appear to show an entire Iranian drone captured intact — a potential intelligence coup for both Ukraine and the United States.

“This drone was neutralized over the Black Sea in September 2022,” a Ukrainian Military Portal publication announced. “The UAV is equipped with a multispectral sensored camera, as well as a laser rangefinder and two suspensions: one under each wing. The captured drone was carrying Ghaem-5 aerial bombs.”



That apparent success marks the first capture of such an Iranian drone, according to Shelest, and with it an unprecedented opportunity to “look what is inside them.” It’s a valuable research opportunity, with the war in Ukraine continuing to function as a proving ground for the full-scale use of drones in war.

“The advantage comes from intelligence gathering about how this Mohajer interface can be used in conjunction with other Russian or Iranian equipment,” Foundation for Defense of Democracies research analyst Ryan Brobst told the Washington Examiner. “I don't think the Iranians have made scientific breakthroughs in developing these drones, but they have made organizational breakthroughs in arranging basic technologies in a functional manner. And by trying to understand that, it could give the United States intelligence advantage in the Middle East or wherever else they encounter these drones.”

A thorough analysis of the machine could allow Ukrainians to understand any communications systems that likely connect the Mohajer to the smaller kamikaze drones, known as the Shahed 136. The Mohajer’s configuration raises the possibility that Russia uses the larger drone as a sort of scout for the smaller Shahed 136, which does not appear to have a camera.

Russian Reporter Left Speechless Amid Kherson Retreat: 'Disaster'

After Ukrainian advances in the southern Kherson region reportedly pushed Russian forces into a retreat in recent days, a Russian war reporter appeared to be left speechless by the setbacks.

"Friends, I know that you expect me to comment on the situation. However, I really don't know what to tell you," Roman Saponkov wrote in a T_legram post on Tuesday for his more than 61,000 followers, according to a translation. "The retreat from the north of the right bank of the Kherson region is a disaster."

Saponkov listed several areas in the region that he said had been "abundantly watered with the blood of our soldiers."

"I just want to say support to our guys. We believe in you and are proud of you," he added.

The Russian retreats in Kherson mean that Ukraine has now made gains on at least three fronts in recent weeks, as it continues to fight a monthslong invasion that some believed would result in a quick Russian victory. Ukraine launched its Kherson counteroffensive in late August, and then began a surprise counteroffensive in the eastern Kharkiv region in early September. Over the weekend, Ukraine advanced in the Donetsk region by retaking the city of Lyman, which the U.K. Ministry of Defence described as a "significant political setback" for Russia.

Putin's recent "desperate" steps, including mobilization and annexations, won't change the situation, he said.

"Ukraine has a vastly more capable and larger force" at this point in the war, he said.

Retired US Army Gen. David Petraeus, a former CIA director, told CNBC on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is in a "desperate" situation in Ukraine.

Putin is "literally out of moves," Petraeus said, adding, "He's trying all these different desperate actions. But the fact is the reality that confronts Russia on the battlefield in Ukraine is that Ukraine has a vastly more capable and larger force than the country that is more than three times their size."

Expanding on how the war reached this point, Petraeus said that Ukraine's full mobilization at the start of the conflict and receipt of billions in aid from Western countries gave it an advantage over Russia, which until recently resisted any level of mobilization.

Russia is believed to have suffered tremendous losses in battle. In August, the Pentagon said the US estimates that Russia has suffered as many as 80,000 casualties — an astonishing number in less than a year of war. Russia is also estimated to have lost thousands of armored vehicles and has pulled obsolete, Soviet-era equipment out of storage to fill the gaps in its ranks.

A Russian local government official who has taken the risk of calling for Vladimir Putin's resignation has told Newsweek he is not afraid of the consequences of his stance.

Gordei Nefedov was one of three deputies from Moscow's Lomonosovsky Municipal Council who voted in September to back an appeal to the Kremlin to consider the possibility of the Russian president stepping down, arguing that he has not provided stability.

"The appeal has been signed, voted upon. I have expressed myself as a deputy and as a citizen. I have no intention of going back on it," Nefedov said from Moscow. "I can't predict what will happen next."

In September, dozens of municipal deputies from Moscow and St. Petersburg called for Putin's resignation amid claims of vote-rigging in local elections and advances by Ukrainian forces in his invasion of Ukraine.

With tough anti-dissent laws, such a move risks imprisonment for those opposing the Kremlin's narrative against the invasion of Ukraine.

However, that did not deter Nefedov who, along with his colleagues, posted a protocol on the council website dated September 8, which was sent to the Kremlin. It condemned the state of Russia's economy under Putin, as well as making a dig at the length of his tenure.

Russia never could win a conventional war with NATO/US and this defeat in Ukraine proves that they are ill-equipped to deal with modern advanced weaponry and battlefield logistics.

If it wasn't for the NATO/US backed support supplying HIMARS, Drones, strategic intelligence from a plethora of satellites and military advice, I don't think Ukraine by itself would have had these results.

Which may appear like a good thing, but because of this US/NATO involvement it sets the pretext for all the nuclear sabre rattling we've been hearing which means the conventional war in Ukraine may be lost, but the strategic nuclear war may be beginning and it won't be Ukraine as the only target. Hope I'm wrong, but that's the risk of escalation in this conflict.

Russian forces are retreating on both the eastern and southern Ukrainian fronts. Russian forces around the southern city of Kherson, the Dnieper River-bordering gateway to Crimea and the Sea of Azov, face an especially critical situation. Russian President Vladimir Putin will soon have to choose between a full-scale retreat or the Hail Mary employment of nuclear weapons.

Even Putin's top supporters recognize that Russia has a big problem.

Take the chairman of the Russian parliament's defense committee, Andrey Kartapolov. A retired top-ranking military officer who previously commanded the Western Military District (which has operational responsibility for areas of Ukraine outside of Crimea), Kartapolov was parachuted into the Duma last September as a reward for his loyalty. But Kartapolov offered no spin on Wednesday. "We need to stop lying," he said on a prime-time state TV show. Condemning the defense ministry's rose-tinted reporting on the war in Ukraine, Kartapolov explained that the country's credibility was being undermined by the public's awareness of major losses. "The people know, our people are not stupid," he said. This is a marked change from Kartapolov's rhetoric in April, when he proclaimed that the war would lead to a majestic shift in "world order."
