Yevgeny Prigozhin, whose Wagner Group of mercenaries has dominated headlines in Ukraine, has reportedly been sidelined by Vladimir Putin after failing to make good on his promises of military gain.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said Prigozhin's "star has begun to set" following his boasts that his forces could capture the Donetsk city of Bakhmut.

The think tank said on Sunday that Putin wanted to see what Prigozhin and his previous commander in Ukraine, General Sergey Surovikin could do after the conventional Russian military had suffered disastrous setbacks.

"Both efforts failed," the ISW said, as Prigozhin's attempts to seize Bakhmut were frustrated and Surovikin's air campaign to inflict suffering on Ukrainian civilians expended "most of Russia's remaining stocks of precision missiles."

Vladimir Putin's military top brass is facing further ructions following the dismissal of one of his main commanders in Ukraine, British defense officials have said.

Colonel General Mikhail Teplinsky had been commander of the Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) since June 2022. He had won plaudits in Russia as a capable leader who had charged with Russia's relatively successful withdrawal in November from the west of the Dnieper River that bisects the Kherson oblast.

However, the U.K. Ministry of Defense said in its daily update on Tuesday that Teplinsky has likely been dismissed, reiterating what had been reported on Russian social-media sites on January 13.

Two days earlier, Putin put the Chief of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov in charge of the Ukraine campaign, taking over from Sergey Surovikin, who had overseen the invasion only since October.

New top Russian general obsesses over troop appearance in Ukraine while army suffers heavy losses

A newly-appointed top Russian general is looking to clean up troop culture with a raft of new rules, but the rules have only helped to unsettle the troops, according to British intelligence.

Gen. Valery Gerasimov took over on Jan. 11 as the chief of general staff – Russia’s top military officer – replacing Sergei Surovikin, who had only taken the role in October 2022. The Kremlin reshuffled its command in an effort to tidy up the command structure, and Gerasimov similarly wanted to clean up troop discipline.

The British Ministry of Defense in a Monday intelligence update revealed that Gerasimov has cracked down on behaviors, including the use of mobile phones, shaving, "non-standard haircuts," non-regulation uniforms and travel in civilian vehicles.

"Gerasimov is clearly out of touch with reality," Rebekah Koffler, president of Doctrine & Strategy Consulting and a former DIA intelligence officer, told Fox News Digital. "The reason the Russian troops use civilian vehicles in combat zone is because of the shortages of proper transport options for troops."

The measures have not sat well with troops, and feedback has been "skeptical," according to the ministry.
