“Cured,” here, means “recovered.” I remember seeing that mistranslation when the outbreak first started, too, and everyone wondered why they were using that language when there was no cure.

Where are the fact checkers when it comes to ridiculous, factually unsupported and sensationalist misinformation statements by Government scaremongers?

For context, here is a UK parliamentary statement by the Health Department showing the Infection Fatality Rate for the whole pandemic is 0.096%. The infection fatality rate, just in case anyone doesn't understand, means the % of those INFECTED who die. This number is not impacted by lockdowns, unless the lockdown is only of the most vulnerable, those over 65 and others with underlying medical conditions. Even in these cases the recovery rate is in excess of 95% irrespective of vaccination status. Then it would be even lower. General lockdown just potentially reduces the number infected, not the % fatality rate.

To paraphrase the German Health Minister, in the way that a fact checker would, this statement is factually partially correct but potentially misleading in a highly sensationalist way. It is also misleading in the sense that no wave of Covid, or indeed any virus infects 100% of the population leading to only the 3 outcomes he references. There is a much larger 4th outcome.

Furthermore, the use of the word "cured" is sensationalist. The word cured implies that some kind of medical intervention was required. 95% of cases are cleared without any medical intervention, by the persons own immune system. The correct phrase should be recovered, or there should be a different categorisation for cured.

What he should have said is that, by the end of winter everyone will be either

1) Vaccinated
2) Recovered, accounting for 99.904% of those actually infected, with a small percentage requiring medical assistance: or
3) Dead, accounting for 0.096%

For total accuracy, based on previous waves, he should also state that over 80% will be uninfected, irrespective of vaccination status, and not fall into any of the above categories.

Doesn't sound anywhere as dramatic when it's accurately stated, does it?
