Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70428285 If you fear for your life, call the cops. You don't mount a posse of you and your boys all bearing shotguns and chase and almost run over a guy and then try to claim self defense when he's the one defending himself again you. "Fists are weapons!" That means anyone can be shot at any time for having hands. I don’t like the law on accessories to murder- I don’t like it that a person in the car gets charged when other passengers commit murder, either. The dude following in the truck did commit felony assault with his vehicle, though- which does make him more likely to be found guilty for being a part of the whole thing. The other two will and should be found guilty of murder. If it becomes okay to shoot an unarmed person based on a suspicion because they finally try to defend themselves with their hands- it is just a matter of time before the argument is made than none of us should have firearms. Travis’s own testimony clearly indicates that he and his father are guilty as sin. So you're driven by paranoia that they're going to come for your guns if they're not found guilty? You're exactly the person who should not be on a jury. The gun wasn't fired until the guy was assaulted, and while Arbery may have had a legitimate right to self-defense it isn't shooting him because of suspicion. It is shooting him based on a tussle for the gun, which is clearly not suspicion. GooPile |

I've also escorted thieves off my property with a gun in my hand. If they tried to take it away. I'd be in fear for my life and would have a God given right to self defense. If someone is running at you, and they refuse to stop: you do have a legitimate fear... and to some extent that fear was justified: Arbery tried wrestling for the gun. You could then argue Arbery had a legitimate fear for being chased, even though the pursuers tried talking to him and the pursuers had reason to suspect him of a crime. That's really the focus here, not whether or not they had a legitimate right to be worried the guy who was running towards their vehicle would assault them and try to turn the gun on them, because he did. Arbery had no weapon and he took nothing. Once he left the premises they should've let the police do their job. I don't care what his past is. That is the same as saying the police can't arrest someone for being suspected of a crime either. The government, nor any of it's administrators, can have any powers the people do not themselves possess. If I don't have the right to do something, then no agent who works on my behalf may have it either. If I interrupt what appears to be a rape, are you suggesting I cannot apprehend and use force against the suspected person? If he attacked me am I not allowed to respond. I'm not weighing on either side of this particular case, but the thinking you just put forth destroys the rule of law and makes anarchy inevitable. |

"Fists are weapons!" That means anyone can be shot at any time for having hands. As far as calling the cops goes. It's not like that where some of us live. In my area it takes a minimum of 1 hour for you to see a cop. If then. Our Sheriff's department doesn't have anyone on duty from 9pm to 9am. So that leaves us with 2 on duty state troopers to cover the entire 530 square miles here. If you fear for your life here, you eliminate the threat and then call the cops. I'm not arguing the rest of what you said. Just pointing out your argument of "if you fear for your life, call the cops" is flawed. That only works in towns and cities. And even in attempt of citizens arrest, the man was at most committing a misdemeanor (trespassing) which would not justify the brandishing of a firearm--- excessive use of force. "Tempus Fugit" |
