Food Prepping and Survival Gear...my 20 year journey
I have taken so much good stuff from generous glpers who have literally changed my life for the better. Some on here may remember ADONIS who got me thinking in a different way and now 15 years later I enjoy almost perfect health in my mid 60s.

Last bloodwork was perfect...dr asked what my secret was lol.

I started prepping before y2k and what I did then is nothing compared to what I do now. Here's what I have learned.

The body was designed to run on fat. After 3-4 days of no carbs you will feel great on nothing but fat and a small amount of protein. Large tubs of lard are cheap and shelf stable. A ton of calories in a few tablespoons keeps the lights on.

Hemp seed has a perfect nutritional profile and has a great shelf life. A tablespoon or two a day gives you most of the nutritional requirements to keep you healthy as well as some higher quality fats and a small amount of carbs.

Lard and hemp seed are easy to store, super compact nutritionally and pretty much take care of the nuts and bolts of systemic health.

The third component is psychological...taste.

I purchased a harvestright freeze dryer and been busy freeze drying fruits, nuts, mushrooms and other tasty snacks. Freeze dried and packed in mylar and an o2 absorber, they will last up to 25 years. Except for the machine, which I bought used for $2500, I can get bulk fruits and veggies for next to nothing. Local stores sell huge boxes that have blemishes for a few dollars each. Cut off the affected part and the rest is perfect.

Bottom line...lard and hemp seed is all you need and shelf stable...also cheap. Freeze dry some comfort foods and youre good to go.

Best of luck to all

Next load in freeze dryer will be a ton of leftover turkey, 3 pounds of tenderloin, mashed potatoes, dressing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and other thanksgiving fare. I can rehydrate anytime in next 10 years and enjoy a meal with almost the same nutritional profile and taste.

What, no beer?
We aren't cut out to be socialists. We are the people who couldn't be constrained by Europe. We are the malcontents, idealists, speculators, dreamers, inventors, debtors and criminals who would not be chained. We don't play well with others, we are brash, outlandish and cunning. let us do what we do best; let us be Americans.

I used to do the supplement thing but realized that most of the supplement capsule if filled with filler. Hemp seed has almost a complete nutritional profile so I take a few tablespoons in the morning and wash down with a cup of water. The lard I just swallow whole.

Literally it is that simple, but most people, including me for most of my life, didnt separate the psychological from the nutritional. That was my breakthrough in understanding. So I start the day with the lard (or other oils like cod liver or olive) and hep seed. That usually carries me through most of the day but I otherwise eat anything I want.

The point is that there is too much inefficiency trying to prep with eals one is accustomed to eating. Prepping is for an emergency situation of unknown duration. In that scenario, the idea is to stay alive and healthy for at least 6 months with likely no power. This will do it and the freeze dried stuff keeps you sane.

I did a test run of one month on the above and felt fine. Of course, my family thinks I'm nuts but thats not a new development for me.

Here is ONE survival tip for you all. Yellow mustard for burns. Wrap aluminum foil around the burn smeared with yellow mustard and repeat for as long as it takes. Cant do it for 3rd degree but as long as the skin is still intact it will work. Cheers

This is awesome - thank you for the reply. LOL you're not crazy, I think it's smart to test run things like that. Do you get the shelf stable lard? I actually like that, MY family thinks I'm crazy because I take a spoonful of it every now and again (I like the taste, plus I'm skinny and have a hard time putting on weight so figure it can't hurt). I agree about the supplements, I use to take magnesium tablets but they have stuff that binds them together that probably isn't great for you. I got magnesium oxide power but you have to mix it in cold water first otherwise it can heat up your insides (weird).
One last question when you reference taking hemp seed in the morning, do you mean actual hemp SEED or hemp seed oil? I'm asking also because I've heard that some things (like flax seed) have to be chewed up really good or ground up in order for you to get the nutrients from them, otherwise they pass through your system virtually unchanged (and therefore unused)
Thank you friend

Raw potatoes work too but thanks. I also used egg whites and burdock for them too.

Anyway this post is great. So true. An emergency situation can be anything. Stocked on spirulina hemp and other powders. Making my own pills.

The pathological part won't matter cause survival mode will be pathological I'm itself.

We can prep all we want but what will probably happen is least expected

Yes, I purchased the 5 pound buckets of shelf stable lard. It does have some additives I would prefer not to consume, but in a pinch it seemed a good trade-off. I also buy some of the gourmet lard which is delicious but recommended to refrigerate after opening.

I do take hemp oil as part of my oil rotation...along with mct oil. It's tough to put on weight after taking oil or fat because the body burns it preferentially and seldom if ever stores the free fats. Sounds strange but I lost 30 pounds doing keto and cutting out carbs. Never hungry at all.

I think a trial run is imperative no matter what strategy one plans for emergency rations. While I was never hungry on my first trial run, I learned that SOME type of fun food was the missing piece. Thats why I opted to the freeze dry method and found it is a wonderful addition to the hemp/lard combo.

The hemp I am referring to is the hulled seed...ie, with the shells removed. Since it has oil, it will oxidize so I started freeze drying the hemp which works well.

Hulled hep seed provides all the vitamins and nutrients you need every day and the lard is the fuel that keeps you warm and motive.

Give it a try and make any adjustments necessary. Knowing that you can take care of yourself and your family in any situation is a great comfort that translates into everyday attitudes. You don't need much to be healthy and sated.

Thank you. I love this thread! I have often been intimidated about thinking of prepping and all the multitude of things a person thinks they would have to have, and so to be able to kind of condense the "necessaries" is a wonderful idea. I know you're not able to post links, but can you give me a clue as to where to find the hulled hemp seed? I agree, sometimes I buy the shelf stable lard but other times the kind that comes in a rectangular block in the refrigerator section of the grocery store. I thought I was the only one who would eat spoonfuls of it! Trust me, I've gotten some strange looks from family for this, but I guess they're used to me now. Also, good point about comfort foods. I imagine it would be demoralizing to NEVER have any fun food.
Thank you again!

You're welcome.

Hulled hempseed is readily available at health food stores, whole foods, on line, etc. Even some mainstream stores are carrying it.

I am practicing freeze drying it but don't have the results yet. Because it has hemp oil, it is susceptable to rancidity and not sure the freeze drying will stop that. Will find answer and report back.

You grasp the entire point of the thread. Don't waste time stockpiling the same foods you eat now...it won't work. If you are in a situation where survival is at stake, you need simple, reliable and compact. I can prep and eat a daily sufficient amount of food with just two items that need no further prep, no refrigeration and no risk of food borne illnesses. Anything I eat after that is a bonus or for my psychic comfort.

It is essential to prepare by learning the stages your body goes through transitioning from carbs to fat burining. Takes about a week and kind of like withdrawal from smoking. After, its great.

Don't confuse survival from comfort and think compact and nutritious
