Old VW Vans do for sure. I was talking to a 911 fire dispatcher I knew several years ago and he said vehicle fires were overwhelmingly air-cooled VW's at the time.

Makes sense I owned one of those POS vans and it was nothing but a dinky underpowered motor shoving a fairly heavy body down the road.

I have had no problems with rodents unless I was in the sticks, so I get your logic but can't imagine that being a thing.

For Chevy's that would be a yes.

Why hasn't the NTSB ordered a mandatory recall of all Tesla's due to unstable chemical batteries that explode into a fire bomb?

More Tesla's have caught fire per production numbers than any other vehicle in history

My partner already has a Tesla (against my wishes) charging in our garage.

Our home will probably combust along with the car one day; we will have lots of heat.

I'm gonna do a hard pass on this unit.

Thanks.

When I had just gotten my license in 1976 I burned up my big brother's '66 VW bus. But it wasn't engine overheat. He had fuel line with no clamp that had slipped off on him first, but with no incident. He neglected to add that hose clamp.

He left it for me to drive as my first borrowed car,
and went on a month long bicycle touring trip.
Within a few miles from home the fuel line popped off and the van rolled to a dead stop in the middle of a busy 2-lane hwy.

I kept trying to crank it until I heard a small bang.
My friend and I exited to find black smoke curling out of the rear engine panel.
Fire intensified and w/no extinguisher (brother's dumb move #2), it burned to a crisp in about 15 minutes as we watched helplessly.

We all do.

However, they are not combusting in record numbers and if they were, would most likely be recalled or manufacturing would cease immediately until they were made safer.

It's not only Elons cars catching fire, it's his solar panels and a lot of other things he creates. Not a great safety record, tbh. He should perfect his current products before making more dangerous items.

Yes, objects catch fire sometimes. Hopefully most of them aren't the size of automobiles or in close proximity to gas appliances and other flammable materials often found in garages and homes.

With all of the technology available to these folks, there HAS to be a way to make these products safer.

I just think they don't care- as long as it sells.

We have a Tesla- I don't get the hype, tbh. It's cool for about a second when you accelerate past someone. Other than that, meh. It's just a fancy toy.

From what I have observed irl, I think the car is an ego booster for a lot of people. They say they're doing it for the environment, but that's bullshit, imo.

I think it makes them feel cool and elite- like they're better than the rest of society. I can see it in their attitude when they drive.

Everyone I know who has one (including immediate family), are very narcissistic people in other areas of their lives. They seem to be carrying it over into their car choice.

I feel safer and more in control with my older fuel cars. The less gingerbread, the better.

Personal preference, I guess. If you can afford one and like it, get it.

Nice honesty here.
I agree, Tesla ownership is in large part about vanity & virtue signal rights.
Hopefully for you, Tesla ownership doesn't become a Bonfire of the Vanities.

In truth until an EV is 100% mineral mined, processed, smelted, manufactured, assembled, shipped, charged, and driven on road systems that are 100% "Green" i.e., ZERO FOSSIL FUELS are used in the entire start to finish process...
they are -by ESG definition- Unsustainable transportation, not Clean or even Alternative transportation.

Still, I would probably own an EV if:

1) battery bank was non-lithium i.e., less highly flammable if crushed/pierced, while also highly cold hearty.
2) Range = I.C. on full tank of fuel.
3) Price was equal.
4) I could fix/service it myself
5) I didn't live under a 175 year old white oak that negates solar charging options.
6) EV company could not possibly lock me out i.e., it had ZERO direct links to Mfg.
7) I could run the Heat/AC on full and still have equal range of IC w/ full tank of fuel.
8) Company wasn't owned/run by a douchebag poser.
