Old VW Vans do for sure. I was talking to a 911 fire dispatcher I knew several years ago and he said vehicle fires were overwhelmingly air-cooled VW's at the time.

Makes sense I owned one of those POS vans and it was nothing but a dinky underpowered motor shoving a fairly heavy body down the road.

When I had just gotten my license in 1976 I burned up my big brother's '66 VW bus. But it wasn't engine overheat. He had fuel line with no clamp that had slipped off on him first, but with no incident. He neglected to add that hose clamp.

He left it for me to drive as my first borrowed car,
and went on a month long bicycle touring trip.
Within a few miles from home the fuel line popped off and the van rolled to a dead stop in the middle of a busy 2-lane hwy.

I kept trying to crank it until I heard a small bang.
My friend and I exited to find black smoke curling out of the rear engine panel.
Fire intensified and w/no extinguisher (brother's dumb move #2), it burned to a crisp in about 15 minutes as we watched helplessly.
