Peace Malaysia seeks aid for 1.5m Gazans
KUALA LUMPUR: Peace Malaysia yesterday launched a humanitarian fund for the 1.5 million people in the Gaza Strip.
Its co-ordinator, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, said yesterday that the non-governmental organisation aimed to collect RM200,000 from the public to buy food and medical supplies.

"The people of Gaza have been without basic necessities since Israel ordered the shutdown of all Gaza crossings in June last year. The situation has deteriorated in the past week."

Mukhriz said residents of Gaza were forced to break through the barrier at the Rafah border crossing to Egypt in search of food supplies.

He said the Israeli siege had caused 85 per cent of Gaza's 1.5 million population to totally depend on food aid.
"This is the highest dependency rate in the world."

Also present were Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia, Abd Elaziz Abu Ghoush, and Ti Ratana Buddhist Society chief high priest K. Sri Dhammaratana.

Abd Elaziz said the Gaza Strip had been under siege for the last two years.

"Now, nothing can enter this Strip without the permission of Israel," he said.

Mukhriz said a seven-man team, including three doctors, would travel 300km from Cairo and provide medical services for Palestinians who continue to stream through the Rafah border.

The team would also try to send in supplies through the border, which Mukhriz said was still open.

"A recce team will be sent either on Feb 4 or 5. This will be followed by the main team."

He said not only Muslims, but people of other faiths living in Gaza were also badly affected by the actions of the Israeli army, including Christians and Jews.

Sri Dhammaratana also called on Buddhists to donate to the cause.

"On behalf of the Buddhist community, I ask people to come forward to help those in need."

Peace Malaysia requests the public to donate money. Cheques made payable to Peace Malaysia should be sent to B-13-D2, Plaza Mont Kiara, No 2, Jalan Kiara, 50480 Kuala Lumpur or banked into Peace Malaysia's CIMB account 142090007389058.
