SEEKING A LITTLE ADVICE FROM FARMERS or other - Yard Flea Eradication
OK, I'm seeking a little insecticide advice to effectively eradicate these little f@ckers, which has become worse this year than any other. I don't live on a farm but on a decent sized property directly on a bayou, so there are water and wildlife elements, and I have dogs running on both sides of the property. I also have dogs, so there are a number of animals.

My entire yard is infested, and I'm interested in how farmers and/or those with large properties treat this issue. And, no, Google sucks now. I want info and not some Amazon-affiliate blog mom writing about flea combing my pets every time they come indoors.

I need to treat the yard, and I want to do it myself because it will need multiple applications and to also be maintained.

I thought I'd reach out to our self-sustainers, rural dwellers and farmers/ranchers or anyone with animals that might share solutions.

What is a cost effective, true results yard insecticide? And what is your go-to method and maintenance schedule? 'Cause these little 'reproducing at a rate to take over the planet' f@ckers are about to make me postal. chuckle

TIA! All productive advice much appreciated.

Dust the whole yard with diatomaceous earth. It's non-poisonous but will kill all bugs, ticks, and parasites.

this is going to be the least expensive, however effective, method you could use. The best option. It's also pretty non toxic compared to alternative chemical liquid products..just don't breathe it in while applying

Traditionally a PCO would blanket spray the property with a cocktail of contact pyrethroids and growth regulators. But if you don’t care about following labels and are patient enough to wait a week or 2 after application you could spray termidor or any other generic containing fipronyl.

I've used food grade DE in my house for the last three weeks as well as directly on my dogs, and it's not effective. Vinegar has worked better than DE in the house.

Perhaps DE to maintain the yard, but I think I need the big guns to kill the infestation first.

I use diatomaceous earth. I don't know about fleas specifically but it really clobbers bugs. I spread it around trees in my chicken run to nail the red mites that plague chickens.

You might want to keep the pets in a smaller yard that you can control easier, and I'd do the DE as advised above.

I wonder if there is some sort of mineral imbalance or something.

I would also wonder if a few barn cats might help cut back on rodent population which might help. You can outfit them with flea collars. There might be a "spirit cat" semi-feral cat organization near you that can supply you with adult cats who need a job.

I'm wondering if you can be smarter with your DE and found this article, which says you should target the application, and other things.

Chickens! Get some hens and let them free range for a few hours a day. They eat all insects, you won't have to feed them as much chicken food, and you have the benefit of your own eggs.

I have a flock of 11 girls and it is the best thing I have done in a long time. And they are fun!

not sure how you'd go about this outdoors, but inside the house we put a shallow bowl of soapy water with a small lamp about 6 inches above the bowl. Leave it overnight and empty it in the morning. ezpz

There are a few feral cats around, and one that frequently takes shelter under my house (raised). I'm appreciative for the rodent patrol in this regard.

When you say mineral imbalance, you are referring to the soil, yes? Interesting. I've not checked for that, and it's quite possible because we've had massive amounts of flowing water on the property during the last several years for various reasons inclusive of the Harvey flood. Thanks for raising that variable for reasons even outside the flea issue.

I use bug b gone in granular form. I use it over about an acre around the house. It kicks their butt if I use it 3 times a year. My dogs can roam over a few hundred acres so I keep the yard clean of critters with BBG and it works if used correctly. and cheap.

How many gallons vs how big of yard? As far as inside goes vacuum the crap out of everything and then throw out the bag/empty the bin. Nothing will penetrate the eggs which have a 14 day cycle so it’s a 2 fold solution.

As scary as it is you can buy all the same products a pest control operator has to have a license to buy from domyown . Com

Filter by target pests and you should find everything you need from organic methods to chemical and methods of application.

Yes, thank you. I spent a good week investigating DE, as I do with most topics before I pull the trigger.

So, yes, I've correctly used and applied it in the home inclusive of cleaning, vacuuming, washing everything before application. They are coming in from outdoors every time the dogs go outside to potty/run, and the DE is not enough to kill them in the house with this constant reintroduction.

Check out beneficial nematodes for yard applications.

They seek out and destroy flea larvae in your yard and are not harmful to anything else.

I disagree that chickens will get rid of fleas. They GET fleas. A friend was using guinea hens to get rid of ticks though.

when I lived in the country (5 acres) my dogs NEVER had a flea, moved to town 6 months ago and I'm constantly fighting fleas...considering treating my yard too. DE is only good until it gets wet (and it takes days to kill) and don't put it anywhere near finished wood (it will take the finish right off, learned that the hard way on a log home)
