Chickens! Get some hens and let them free range for a few hours a day. They eat all insects, you won't have to feed them as much chicken food, and you have the benefit of your own eggs.

I have a flock of 11 girls and it is the best thing I have done in a long time. And they are fun!

I use bug b gone in granular form. I use it over about an acre around the house. It kicks their butt if I use it 3 times a year. My dogs can roam over a few hundred acres so I keep the yard clean of critters with BBG and it works if used correctly. and cheap.
 Quoting: popsawheelie

Two weighing in for Bug-B-Gon. Thank you.

I think I will attempt that first, and if ineffective, then reach for the bigger guns. Maintain with nematodes and spot treat with DE if needed while also attempting continued DE use in the house once the yard infestation is managed because I do have 20#s to use.

Thanks to everyone for the very useful info! Greatly appreciated...because the flame thrower option was being considered. chuckle

I was introduced to tea tree oil several decades ago while traveling in SE. All the effective mossy spray used there during that time contained it as a main ingredient, and tea tree oil was the go-to with islanders and locals. You could pick up a bottle at every corner store. Works great for mosquito repellent!

I've also read positive info about cedar chips as a deterrent. Placing it along shared fence lines is reported to help keep fleas from entering the yard from neighboring yards. I may try that, too, in spot areas.

A full yard assault on fleas! chuckle

Re: SEEKING A LITTLE ADVICE FROM FARMERS or other - Yard Flea Eradication
OK, I'm seeking a little insecticide advice to effectively eradicate these little f@ckers, which has become worse this year than any other. I don't live on a farm but on a decent sized property directly on a bayou, so there are water and wildlife elements, and I have dogs running on both sides of the property. I also have dogs, so there are a number of animals.

My entire yard is infested, and I'm interested in how farmer's and/or those with large properties treat this issue. And, no, Google sucks now. I want info and not some Amazon-affiliate blog mom writing about flea combing my pets every time they come indoors.

I need to treat the yard, and I want to do it myself because it will need multiple applications and to also be maintained.

I thought I'd reach out to our self-sustainers, rural dwellers and farmers/ranchers or anyone with animals that might share solutions.

What is a cost effective, true results yard insecticide? And what is your go-to method and maintenance schedule? 'Cause these little 'reproducing at a rate to take over the planet' f@ckers are about to make me postal. chuckle

TIA! All productive advice much appreciated.

After not being able to pick up a bag of BugBGon today because I couldn't locate one (OOS), I've decided to purchase the Bifen and Tekkor kit and a canister of Precor 2000.

May I ask, should I treat outside for a couple of consecutive days as directed, and wait to treat indoors on the third day, or will it be effective if I treat interior and exterior on the first day?

By the bye, my predictive typing/auto-correct on my phone initially changed "Bifen" to "Biden". Ha.

If anyone is questioning, this is not an issue of a few fleas to treat over time. This is a complete infestation where my monthly flea++ treated dog brought in about 40-50 fleas on her coat tonight after a potty run (easy to see with short, white fur), and I had probably that many on my ankles and yard shoes. Ugh.

I dont see a problem doing it all at once. Flea dip dogs as well. The outside should be resprayed at around 2 weeks to get any survivors or ones that hatch in that time. I dont usually add the tekko on 2nd spray unless you get a lot of rain etc. The tekko should last a month outside. For inside run a vacuum a day before as the vibrations will hatch more fleas making the insecticide work better. Know your square feet so nothing is over or under applied.

I Had fleas real bad every fall because we lived on creek in NC. I tried everything.

I bought brovecto online, in large doses and split them for my 7 dogs and treated each outdoor cat with their proper dosage. It’s cheaper to split. I can get an entire summer of flea treatment with one dose of brovecto in June. Haven’t had fleas in 3 years.

I was at my wits end. Good luck!

This. You’ll never completely control them without broadcasting tons of poison they will be exposed to, not to mention yourself. Just wash your dogs with a good natural soap, dawn works very well for killing fleas but I think it’s toxic, just give them a good lather and rinse with a natural soap like dr bronners or something., really work it in there to killl them. Sometimes it’s good to do 2 washes, first soap gets all the oils out, rinse, 2nd soap can really cover the fleas

A couple years ago we had horrible flying squash bugs in the garden

I don’t use pesticides on food crops - once in awhile NEEM oil if I must

Well - I remembered the best thing I sprayed directly on my site when totally infested was a recipe I got online

Apple Cider Vinegar
Water
DAWN dish soap - in a nice smell like raspberry pomegranate

Don’t remember the proportions - but it killed those little devils

So for the squash bugs I used a sprayer with DAWN so they couldn’t fly

In your case I’d get a pump sprayer - put in vinegar and Dawn and spray

Too much vinegar will kill grass and plants - I use it for weeds in the driveway - but most green things survive a little

Just spray and make sure they can’t fly

Fleas like WET GRASS

Also - there is a medicine called CAPSTAR for dogs that are totally infested that kills the fleas biting a dog in an hour or two - REALLY WORKS

But you don’t want to use it repeatedly

I used it on a found stray puppy and he was greatly relieved and then we bathed him after the fleas were dead and we could take him inside. Hundreds of fleas on the white towel I laid him on outside ... dead

DAWN is special because it makes the other stuff STICK - vinegar and Dawn - try it

My sister-n-law swears that salt kills fleas. I salted my floors, cracks/spaces between tiles, the spaces beneath wall trim and the floor (this is where fleas lay their eggs and grow them in the dust). I literally took a .50cent can of salt and sprinkled salt all over my floors through out my house. Hardfloors and carpeting. Then I let it sit for 48 hours. The salt dries up the eggs. Then I vacuumed it up. I've noticed way less fleas on my cats. U can use 7 dust outside. Just broadcast it round your house and yard.

Many thanks, Theobromine. I've bathed one of my dogs with a mixture of Dawn, ACV and sulphur powder emulsion for many years to very successfully treat her genetic inability to fight off demodex mites. That and Advantage Multi have kept her flea and other pest free with a beautiful coat and no significant skin issues for years, which was far more effective than the RX drug I let the vet talk me into for the month following her diagnosis. Horrible, horrible med that exponentially increased her condition rather than treated it. Sulphur was key to treatment.

Interestingly, the heartworm med in Multi Adv is ivermectin, and I can't help but wonder if that's an ingredient that also helps her particular condition. If I miss a month of the Multi, her condition flares again.

But, nothing is working for this level of fleas. Bless her. Lots of baths, ACV spray and flea combing have been my go-to for her until I get the infestation controlled.

Many thanks for the info!

Sulfur, powdered works quicker, granulated/pelleted is cheaper. It would be difficult to overapply. 20 to 50 lbs an acre should work good for fleas and ticks. Is NOT poisonous. You can also put the powdered type in a sock, tie the sock shut, and use it to dust your feet and lower legs, works great.

Nematodes.

Expensive, spread with a garden hose sprayer, die once below ~40F, works on everything not just fleas. They bore into the larvae of everything. Safe for pets and people.

I'm wondering if you can be smarter with your DE and found this article, which says you should target the application, and other things.

[link to homeguides.sfgate.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Eilonwy

The real issue with DE is that it has to really heavily cover the bugs surface or it won't scratch the bugs cuticle and dehydrate the bug.
If it doesn't get in the joints it's not going to work.
You should use a blower to fog the insects with the dust.
Sprinkling it here and there isn't going to cut it, literally.

when I lived in the country (5 acres) my dogs NEVER had a flea, moved to town 6 months ago and I'm constantly fighting fleas...considering treating my yard too. DE is only good until it gets wet (and it takes days to kill) and don't put it anywhere near finished wood (it will take the finish right off, learned that the hard way on a log home)
 Quoting: Serepta Ann

I missed your post earlier today. Are you kidding about DE taking the finish off wood?! Micro abrasion from the silica with weather? What in the world would cause DE to remove finish from wood?

Well, DE is covering my wood floors that have an almost 90 year old finish. They've survived a lot; let's see if DE is what finally takes 'em out. Ha!
