I don't live on a farm but on a decent sized property directly on a bayou, so there are water and wildlife elements, and I have dogs running on both sides of the property. I also have dogs, so there are a number of animals. My entire yard is infested, and I'm interested in how farmers and/or those with large properties treat this issue. And, no, Google sucks now. I want info and not some Amazon-affiliate blog mom writing about flea combing my pets every time they come indoors. I need to treat the yard, and I want to do it myself because it will need multiple applications and to also be maintained. I thought I'd reach out to our self-sustainers, rural dwellers and farmers/ranchers or anyone with animals that might share solutions. What is a cost effective, true results yard insecticide? And what is your go-to method and maintenance schedule? 'Cause these little 'reproducing at a rate to take over the planet' f@ckers are about to make me postal. TIA! All productive advice much appreciated. . [/quot Got rid of fleas indoors with Listerine!!! Stuff works GREAT! |

Quoting: Butch DeFeo and like someone else said, apply diatomaceous Earth everywhere, get a 50 lb bag Thanks, Butch, I'm good on the sun except under the at mininum 60 year old, massive oak tree in the back yard. I can't even grow grass in that large area due to lack of sunlight, but it provides nice shade in hot TX summers, though! Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is a flea 'hot spot' because it's where one of the dogs runs - good shade for him - and he comes in covered whenever I put him in that area. May have to rethink that, too. Ya know, after the hell freeze we had in Feb, one would think fleas and other pests would not be such an issue this year... . . "Stop the lockdown. Stop the masks. Tie a rope around the mouth of the pillowcase and drag it up and down the yard a few times. The bugs hate sulfur and will leave posthaste. Another old trick is to dust sulfur on shoes, socks and pants cuffs, as this acts as a repellent. |

It's non-poisonous but will kill all bugs, ticks, and parasites. Quoting: O.Hai I've used food grade DE in my house for the last three weeks as well as directly on my dogs, and it's not effective. Vinegar has worked better than DE in the house. Perhaps DE to maintain the yard, but I think I need the big guns to kill the infestation first. . What I use for flea, tick, lice, ant, and roach, infestation in the house is Enforcer Flea Killer for Carpets. You can use it on upholstery too. It works great at a cheap price. When applying make sure you brush it into the carpets by using a broom and the longer you keep it on the carpet/upholstery the better. It breaks the flea cycle. Then you just vacuum it up. Make sure your pets, fish, and opened food is away from the area being treated. I usually do one room at a time. Lasts for about a month or two... For my dog, I use Seresto Flea Collar. My dog doesn't like Pyrethrins. So this collar uses another type of insecticide. It is dog and cat safe. Where the Pyrethrin type is not good for cats. It suppose to last up to 8 months. Fleas drop within hours and the Flea and Ticks don't have to bite the dog to get the insecticide in them to kill them... So far I'm very happy with the Seresto Flea Collar... I used to use Dawn dishwashing detergent to bathe the dog to kill the fleas. It worked, but labor intensive because it doesn't ward off the Fleas... |

The outside should be resprayed at around 2 weeks to get any survivors or ones that hatch in that time. I dont usually add the tekko on 2nd spray unless you get a lot of rain etc. The tekko should last a month outside. For inside run a vacuum a day before as the vibrations will hatch more fleas making the insecticide work better. Know your square feet so nothing is over or under applied. Quoting: bugkiller . Thank you! Bugkiller, you rock, and I'm so grateful for the info and direction you've shared for this war. Fleas, you better run! . I also use tekko with an insecticide usually suspend polyzone to treat for mosquitoes and am mosquito free for about 2 months in the summer. |

Make sure you use a QUALITY flea prevention for AT LEAST 3 MONTHS on your dogs and pets while you are treating the yard. The real ones you buy from the vets office work different ways. Some sterilize the fleas, and some poison the fleas nervous system from one bite and then when the dead fleas drop off the pet, the larvae eat the dead flea carcases and also die from the poison. I used to work at an animal hospital, so I've heard the sales reps explain their products a bunch of times. There is a spray one can buy to spray your carpets and couches, as the fleas drop their eggs anywhere. If the dogs sleep with you in bed, they are dropping flea eggs in bed. |

They do NOT work! Most usually end up harming the pet. I know you probably don't want to use pesticides for some reason, but in your case i think you HAVE to get a quality one from the vet (or online) for your dogs. If your pets are treated, then They won't be bringing them in from outside anymore. And if you get the right ones, it will also help with the outside problem too. I'm telling you, at least 3 months worth! If you treat for one month, the next batch of larvae will become adult and be ready to infest all over again... |

And they are fun! . Ha! Now that's a consideration but a ton of responsibility and time that I don't currently have. I bet you so enjoy the eggs! One day. =) . Chickens are so easy once you get the coop and run set up. They are no more work than dogs. You let them out of their hen house in the morning and make sure they have food and water. Mine are in their run most of the day. About an hour before dusk if I am home I let them out for a while. I collect my reward of beautiful eggs for that day. When it get dark they roost in their house and you can shut their door. Not only do they control the bug population but they give us fertilizer for our veggie gardens. And any veggie scraps or slightly spoiled veggies are a treat for them. It's almost like having pigs. Nothing goes to waste here. Used egg shells go back into our compost pile. In these times of food insecurity it is the way to go. And when they see you and come running across the yard it is adorable. They are so cute when they run. No good deed goes unpunished. |
