Due to a large increase in civilian emergency workers in the past 4 years, it is possible from this week to start CPR anywhere in the Netherlands within 6 minutes after reporting a cardiac arrest.

There are currently 245,000 Dutch people who have registered with Hartslagnu as a civilian aid worker. Together with the other emergency services and 24,000 available AEDs, they provide complete coverage in the Netherlands.

After a cardiac arrest has been reported at 112, in addition to the normal emergency services, civilian emergency workers present in the area are also alerted. The civilian first responders are often on site earlier than an ambulance and can therefore start resuscitation faster and within the crucial 6 minutes. A resuscitation that is started within 6 minutes reduces the risk of permanent brain damage due to oxygen deficiency.

The Netherlands is the only country with this coverage. According to researchers at Amsterdam UMC, such coverage of care providers provides a greater chance of survival in the event of a cardiac arrest. In the 1990s, that chance was still 9%, due to the current care provision already 25%.
