Riding a bike is great, perhaps you could choose a single rider bike instead of a tandem and ride it with your buddy north/south aka 69 position and not have to ride such a long framed bike.

Tandem bikes are great for speed.. Like a 2 rider paceline (double engine with half the wind resistance).

I'd be willing to bet if two racing shape cyclist were to hammer on a good tandem, they'd be able to sustain 40 - 50 mph on the flats.

There is a limit between saving and stupidity.

There are not reason to ride a tandem..they are expensive, they offer very low difference in terms of speed/time saving

But if you are doing it just to pick on your coworkers so they show up their immaturity...well keep going
