Think of consciousness as a pool. Wifi.
The more devices connected, the weaker the signal.
Humans were vetting the souls incarcerated into bodies.
There are two pools.

As humans multiplied, their abilities diminished.
Soon they were forced to create artificial means via structures, technology to maintain their ability to block energy from coming here.

In the works, eventually the other pool was able to incarnate into a single being. So powerful it destroyed everything and has done everything in its power to suppress this knowledge.

Eventually there is a soul brought in this world of the pool to turn this around again. And again
