Technology is not evil.

How can a wheel or an abacus (etc) be evil?

I'm not even sure if there is "evil" per se, rather I feel there is only balance.

How that balance expresses itself can be considered either good or bad, dependent on perspective.

"Evil" seems to me, to be nothing more than lies and self-interest.

Even when looking at technology like crypto's, which are at the cutting edge of our technological capabilities, the "tech" is effectively just a mathematical formula (the crypto) with lots of solutions (the coins), run on a glorified electrical abacus (the computer).

What crypto's represent (because they are currently abstract), however, is a financial system, where value is based on demand.

What "demand", and thus "scarcity" represent, is self-interest.

So, currency (even traditional promissory notes) is the physical embodiment of the concept of self-interest.

Put colloquially; "Money" is the root of all "evil". ;-)

When looked at this way, "money" is effectively a "ledger" to define the comparative value between things, rather than the inherent value of a thing itself (ie. "money" is the figurative middle-man of abstraction).

Once this is understood, it becomes clear that self-interest causes one to "judge" (be the middle-man) the comparative value between things, out of self-interest, rather than value "things" themselves (another way to put this in terms of how it expresses in people; the majority of people "convert to cash" in their heads, before interacting).

It's why people are willing to sell things that other people consider abhorrent... a matter of perspective, or comparative value.

So, regardless of whether in a vault, a filing cabinet or a hard-drive, money is (and always has been) data.

When taken with our tendency to hoard against future scenarios, it is obvious why we now have so much data (how many digital photos do you have?... or how big is your music collection?... etc).

As we established earlier though, money is data, so... "Data" is the root of all evil.

To summarise, technology is only a tool, and it is people's (or any entity's) self-interest that defines a technology as good or bad.

Once we started devaluing the inherent nature of things (thousands of years ago) in favour of "trading" for things, we created a need for "data".

That "data" represents the self-interest of people... as it grows, so does the "appearance" of evil.
