"Intensity of earthquakes has reduced on the Portuguese island of São Jorge
The earthquakes have been suffering a progressive reduction in intensity on the island of São Jorge, in the Azores, in recent days, suggesting that the seismovolcanic crisis is heading towards stability. Despite the decrease in quakes, authorities draw attention to the level of volcanic alert that remains high...

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza, visited the island on the Easter holiday to convey confidence to the population that the situation is returning to normal, after a month of worrying seismic activity.

However, the national authority said it thought it premature to immediately reduce the volcanic alert level, which remains at V4, on a scale that goes up to V7, which would give the false impression of the end of the threat of an eruption.

More than 29 thousand earthquakes
Constant monitoring carried out by the Center for Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance of the Azores (CIVISA) has shown that the frequency of earthquakes no longer resembles the beginning of the crisis on March 19, when over 12,000 records occurred within a week.
CIVISA recorded 29,200 earthquakes until this Monday, the 18th."

Almost 30,000 earthquakes in a month. Daily frequency increases again in São Jorge

The island of São Jorge, in the Azores, has registered “an increase in the daily frequency of earthquakes” in relation to the last few days, the Azores Seismovolcanic Information and Surveillance Center (CIVISA) reported this Wednesday.

“We are with what was predictable, with some fluctuations in what is the energy released by the volcanic system of Herds”said the president of CIVISA, Rui Marques, in statements to journalists, at the briefing to update the seismovolcanic crisis in São Jorge, which began on March 19.

According to the official, “after seven days with some increasing trend in the daily frequency of earthquakes”, on Monday there was “a slight decrease”, but until 10:00 am this Wednesday there was “a further increase in the daily frequency of earthquakes”.

Asked about the tremors that have been recorded in São Miguel and Terceira, Rui Marques clarified that “they are punctual earthquakes”, ensuring that CIVISA will continue to monitor the situation “as it does for the 50 seismogenic zones of the Azores daily, 24 hours a day” .

“They are not seismic crises. After these earthquakes we do not have an evolution of the situation with more associated seismicity”, he said.

The graph looks very active today.

It seems strange to me that the quakes they talk about feeling are only a 1 & a 2. They don't seem to be that shallow.

Hey, its the exiled here. We were at the epicentre (within 40km or 25 miles) of a magnitude 5.7 earthquake last night at 11:07pm local time UTC+2. It was just over the border in Bosnia. Croatia is a thin strip here and we are very close to the border in Dubrovnik.

It came from nowhere and was a rumble that just got bigger and bigger. Depth of 10km or 6 miles. The hotel pool which we can see from our balcony was crazy!!!

Hotel emptied into the car park. Felt at least three since above a 4 mag.

Will keep you posted. Remember, we came here based on my theory that magma is moving under the Med next after the Azores.

Hey sweeti! Check out the earthquakes just to the East in the Mediterranean Sea, where I am in Croatia (opposite the east coast of Italy about level with Naples). Basically across from the 'calf' of the Italy 'boot' across the Adriatic Sea.

In a couple of months heading back to the Canaries after having a stay here.

Been quite a few aftershocks here and they are getting shallower...

The five point seven last night at 11:07 local time was bigger than anything I've experienced before. A lady was killed and there were a few injuries. Everyone here in Dubrovnik was fine. We're about 25 miles from the epicentre.

Last one was a couple of hours ago at 2km deep.

I bet you can really feel those shallow ones!
I hope where you're staying is safe should should another big one hit while you're sleeping.

I have noticed the quakes seem to be tracking farther to the east lately.

Just had another jolt around a mag 5 at 6:27am just as I got up for breakfast local time

That last one felt like the jolt on La Palma about eight hours before the eruption, except one thing, it was about 20 times or more powerful
