Quoting: Astromut Because of this telescope's halo orbit around L2, it will be in constant sunlight and should routinely be visible to sufficiently powerful telescopes back on earth, even once it reaches its destination a million miles away. Assuming everything properly unfolds, the sunshield will have a surface area of about 300 square meters and it will be extremely reflective. Given those factors, even from 1.5 million km it will have an apparent magnitude of about 15 by my calculations, well within the reach of small telescopes equipped with suitable deep space cameras. And using additional telescopes around the globe it will provide an excellent target to demonstrate topocentric parallax and prove the existence of a manmade object in deep space well beyond the moon. |

Imagine all the things we did not know we did not knew about the universe that this probe will reveal. An object placed at any one of these 5 points will stay in place relative to the other two. Credit: NASA When you ask an astronomer about the James Webb Space Telescope's orbit, they'll tell you something that sounds like it came from a science-fiction novel. The Webb won't be orbiting the Earth –instead we will send it almost a million miles out into space to a place called "L2." L2 is short-hand for the second Lagrange Point, a wonderful accident of gravity and orbital mechanics, and the perfect place to park the |

[link to docs.google.com (secure)] What is L2? Lagrange point 2, a gravitational balance point where the combined gravity of the sun and earth allow the spacecraft to orbit the sun in one year despite being a million miles away from Earth directly away from the sun. It orbits this point and thus always remains a million miles further from the sun than the earth despite traveling with the earth around the sun. |

I have been watching every single Ariane launch from the very first launch, 24 december 1979 at Kourou. I followed this launch on the Arianespace live streaming. Another perfect launch by Ariane 5. Looking forward to Ariane 6. It will be soon. I came. I saw. I Concorde. For once you have tasted Concorde you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return. You know you can trust them, just like you can trust all the other agencies of the US government. And Japanese space agency, soviet space agency, China space agency, Indian space agency, Russian space agency, now SpaceX and the other dozen private space companies So many are in this conspiracy all in the day and age when a sitting president can't keep a hummer a secret and that was just two people As time progresses you FEers will have a harder time justifying your conspiracy theory since it is always your proof of last resort when even simple things like sunset and sunrise and moon phases can't be explained by your model |

So many moving parts, so many potential points of failure. I worked in the space program in the early days of the shuttle. Would give my left dangler for an opportunity to join some great project, but I am glad I am not involved with this one. |
