Tonight at 9pm eastern I will be live streaming the James Webb Space Telescope as it heads to the L2 point a million miles from Earth! Because of this telescope's halo orbit around L2, it will be in constant sunlight and should routinely be visible to sufficiently powerful telescopes back on earth, even once it reaches its destination a million miles away. Assuming everything properly unfolds, the sunshield will have a surface area of about 300 square meters and it will be extremely reflective. Given those factors, even from 1.5 million km it will have an apparent magnitude of about 15 by my calculations, well within the reach of small telescopes equipped with suitable deep space cameras. While I sincerely hope for a great outcome for this system, I will be shocked if everything works. So many moving parts, so many potential points of failure.
