I drove out to Washington state to be in Seattle the first month of 2016. I'd always wanted to try living in Seattle, it was my generations Nashville, everybody was going there in the 1980s and 90s but I was a New Yorker until 2005.

The woman I stayed with was a Koo koo bird, She had a nice house in one of the gentrified black neighborhoods by the lake. She literally said "I'm an artist, I make art". In some Seattle neighborhoods you need to be in seriously good condition to even live in your own home or take a walk. The climbs up stairs of stone, the miles of pathways uphill, I could barley make it to the lake and back. Her house was perched on a hill with multiple levels of stairs to get inside that were not good for a senior. I wonder if she sold now.

It's another country, all three of the western States are like crossing a foreign border, and that was years ago. In eastern Washington a town I stayed overnight in was fabulous very friendly.
I took for granted we would always have freedom, and that we would always be America. Its gone now, I'd be somewhat afraid to even go to the West coast now, and I was just there 6 months ago.
