They didn't "lose IFR", but cancelled IFR on approach. This is very common and does more to help other aircraft that may be on approach. IFR = Instrument Flight Rules. An IFR aircraft must be give much more protected airspace around it by ATC, thus slowing approaches at an airport. If they had come out of the clouds and could see the runway, they have the option of cancelling IFR and proceeding to land visually... |
