Wondering if he really didn't have the runway in sight; especially after the comments about the lights.

I guess IFR failed, sounded like they were trying to get out of it, or the loud pops were something that wasn't going to let anything have control. What is ifr and how is it lost ? Instrument flight rules. Pretty much flying blind and relying only on information provided by the instrumentation as guidance.
