We Built Our Cozy Off Grid Cabin for $7,000
Due to a relatively mild winter this year, we built our off grid cabin in about 1 month, using carefully selected materials to maximize cost savings. In this last video in the series, I give a run down of what we did and some things that I would change if I had to do it all over again. Below is a link to the playlist for the entire build series.

I built a tiny LOG CABIN in my backyard | From start to finish

In this video I build a tiny log cabin in my backyard from the scratch. All the wood is from my property, as I had to cut all these trees to make space for our home. The cabin ends up being my small workshop for future projects.

Pretty much everything I do in this video is my first time doing it, so don't expect a professional outcome. However the video hopefully inspires someone to start their own project. Just keep working, you'll learn a lot and maybe also end up having something useful.

This video is a compilation of my earlier videos. If you are interested in seeing some parts of the process in more detail, please take a look at my older videos. You'll find some explanations, mistakes and insights.

TIMELAPSE: AMAZING OFF GRID CABIN Built for $300

When we arrived on our off grid property we needed a place to live while we built our house. This off grid cabin cost us just $300 using reclaimed building materials.

In 2015 we quit our lives in the city to buy bare land in the country and build a timber frame home from scratch with our bare hands, debt-free, with no prior experience. It’s been a wild ride of ups, downs, highs, lows, rain and rainbows, but we haven’t lost sight of our goals and have gotten further in three years than we thought we’d get in ten. Join us as we build our house, develop our rural property, practice traditional skills such as gardening and food preservation and go to even greater heights (literally) of exploring the world through aviation as a new private pilot!

Building MICRO GLASS HOUSE 90 sq ft - On a Budget (COMPLETE BUILD)

I work on the exterior of the tiny a-frame cabin in the woods by adding modified cord wood siding to the face of the plywood. I also button up the rest of the exterior construction including window installation, doors, and plywood. I use board and baton milled from my portable sawmill to complete the outside of the tiny house in the woods.

I build a tiny micro a-frame off tiny off grid house in the woods with mostly reclaimed materials.

I use old windows salvaged from a fire house and wood milled from my portable sawmill to put together this super small off grid house!

A-Frame Cabin Build Office

In this episode we show you how we build our A-Frame cabin - Bryan's new home office! He always fancied building an A-frame and so during lockdown decided just to go for it and use our general have-a-go and see what happens approach! Bryan had the plan in his head, we ordered all the wood from our local builder merchant and got most of it done in a couple of weeks. It cost around £2000 in materials and we did all the labour ourselves.

The roofing tiles come from Katepal www.katepaluk.co.uk

The door came from Glastonbury Reclamation www.glastonburyreclamation.co.uk
If you have any questions about our A-frame build then please let us know in the comments.

Great thread OP. You’ve inspired me. My Frontier OS31 sawmill was delivered last week, waiting on trailer so it’s mobile. I’m on 75 acres in S Miss. I’m going to build 2 cabins on 2 different ponds we have. One will be connected to commercial power, the other totally off grid , not going to install solar.

Very satisfying to be able to clear the land but utilize the resources. I’m subscribed to your channel, thanks for the great info.

30 years self-reliant: family $10K/year homestead & dugout

In 1978 the Howards were urban professionals. Wanting a simpler, more meaningful life on a smaller budget, the family-of-4 lived on $18K/year, reducing costs to $10K/year after moving to their "intentional" Colorado homestead.

They moved into an abandoned double-wide trailer on their 35 acre property and began raising chickens and goats for milk, as well as tending a large garden. After 17 years in the mobile home, they began to build a larger home themselves, cutting local trees for beams and collecting stones for the walls. It took them seven years to construct the home which is one big "great room" connected to the old trailer by a small door. For cooking and heating, they use a wood-fired stove, as well as the Rumford fireplace they built from plans found at the library.

Many of their appliances are human-powered which they see as “appropriate technology”. "One thing you'll notice around here", explains Evan, "Is that if you're going to do things by hand, you're got cranking: almost everything cranks". They hand crank: their grain mill for flour, their ice cream churner, their apple cider press, and even their washing machine which Cheri has dubbed her "Pleasure Washer". Evan has used his extensive collection of primitive hand tools to make everything from cabinet drawers to chair legs.

The couple doesn’t feel they are making a sacrifice (except perhaps when dumping the compost toilet in mid-winter) but instead view the extra labor as “play” and something that keeps them healthy in mind and body. The couple generates a minimum income from online classes Evan teaches.

They compare their lives to those of monks and believe the geography of space is important. When Evan found a spot on the property with perfectly-aligned rocks for a dugout, he knew this would be his monastic “sanctuary” or “cell”. He spent six years using a pickaxe to dig the underground hut.

Totally awesome getting your own sawmill.. and building utilizing you're own resources. However, I don't have a channel. What you see are those folks who do. Glad you're inspired and enjoying their "how to" projects.

We're on our second cabin. The first was totally off-grid in the Yosemite mountains where we had 50 acres on a mountain top. 12' by 16' with a rock wall we built next to where the wood stove was. 2 sky lights and loft. All knotty pine interior with terra cotta slate floors, enclosed screened in front porch. Well. Outdoor clay bread oven. That area had bears and mountain lions along with rattle snakes.

Our new cabin is on 9 acres in the woods next to an all year stream. It's Japanese style with multiple 6x6 and 6x8 beams. All interlocking pieces. High pitched 17' roof. Need that due snow load. It's 12' by 18'. We'll add a 6x8 bump out kitchenette and 5'x12' bathroom with skylights.

Because of the style it was a challenge doing the prep the interior support walls before cladding. The first year the frame was left out in the weather where it had been built by the class. Unfortunately by the time it was moved onto it's spot by the creek much of the lumber has warped making it a challenge to work on. So there were no walls, floor or roof. However, after getting the floor down there was a wood burning stove that we sat around for warmth in winter. It has a cathedral ceiling with triangular windows looking out up into 100 foot tall pine trees. We did opt for a sky light in the loft area. Big area window over-looking the meadow. We plan to build an enclosed 12'x 12' screened in porch that will be the outdoor living space off the front over-looking the creek. Thinking about it being an area for an outdoor kitchen. However.... we do have bears here too. May have to rethink that.

To make the cabin look invisible in the wood we painted it with a very dark purple/brown color where it fades into the forest. Same color as tree bark. Metal roof is dark green. The scaffolding looks like something out of Swiss Family Robinson from our left over cut down trees. We picked up some milled sides that have the bark on one side and smooth on the other. Used some of that as siding for the 10'x20' car port.

We're finishing up the interior wall insulation and will start on the knotty pine all paneling next.

The way Bush Radical built his cabin and porch was easy compared to what we did as we also had to dig 3 foot deep holes for the sauna tube and fill with cement, chains attached to top and tied into the foundation once the house frame was set on it. And the frame was pre-built from a wood working class..

All-in-all building a cabin is exceptionally rewarding. There is something special about building ones own cabin. It's our happy place.

Here's an interesting link with lots of ideas.

Military Family Escape A Life Of Mortgage Debt By Building A Tiny House

This military family have built an incredible tiny house to call home! One of the challenges of being in the military is the probability of being relocated. Needing to pack up all of your belongings and find a new home in a new city can be a challenge, but what if you could just take your home with you?

That's exactly what Russel and Sarah decided to do, when they repurposed their deposit for a conventional home and instead chose a mortgage and debt free life for their family in a tiny house on wheels.

This home has been cleverly designed to give each family member their own space while functioning as a comfortable and welcoming family home. Now parked up on a property right across from the air force base, Russel only has to jump over the fence to get to work.

Hewing Haus builds their homes with cross-laminated timbers (CLT) and they insulate on the outside. Building in this way creates a very quiet and energy-efficient home that requires little energy to heat. As with most small spaces and well-sealed homes, air quality is very important. Each unit has a Heat Recovery Ventilation unit, as well as extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom.

'Off-grid' solo/couple is good fantasy play and can develop skills.

As far as long term survival, unless you are *really* committed to it it is a horrible strategy.

A place at the edge of town / next to common hunting grounds isn't going to be your salvation.

Congrats! Your stuff is now one of those caches that are found in video games - for someone else.

Biggest myth is not just that you can 'defend' but that defense is even possible.

You need to plan to either be completely invisible or have NOTHING that anyone else would want.

Those puffs of smoke and scent of wood burning will bring the 2-legged vermin.
