It's a self-medication method to quiet their minds which are bombarded day and night with an incessant flow of ideas, topics, imaginary conversations, and opinions. Most of them were insomniacs as well. It doesn't take away from their innately extraordinary abilities or talents. That's something that scientists have been trying to figure out for ions. With all their contributions, in the end, history overlooks their flows as necessary flaws of their genius. That kinda puts things into perspective now doesn't it? You're counting all Russian deaths in wwII from all causes. The vast majority was from starvation of people who lived hand to mouth already and once the food was gone there was no resupply. Russian military deaths were abt 9m. Not insignificant, but again starvation deprivation disease accounted for most of it. Without a western front the Germans would have had the resources to finish the job, and without an eastern front the allies faced 1/3 the resistance they would have. That happened before Pearl Harbor when Stalin received intelligence that the Japanese weren't going to attack Siberia. Germany didn't have very good allies, but that was because Hitler was very bad at diplomacy and no one trusted him as he violated his word so often. The Germans just couldn't beat the Soviets as they never had supply lines strong enough to support their large armies so far from Germany. Germany's only chance was for a quick victory and when the Soviets didn't crumble and held off the Germans in the Battle of Moscow Germany lost. They would be in a strong position for several more years but their opportunity to win the war was over. They knew going in they couldn't win a war of attrition and when they failed to take Moscow and the Soviets didn't overthrow Stalin the German chance of victory was gone. |
