Re: Winston Churchill was a DRUNKARD!
A very good movie which shows it is public knowledge that along with drinking all day Churchill also smoked all day! Not hard to see why the Nazis hated him, he stood up to them.

For my money, Brian Cox is far more believable than Oldman in 2017's OTHER movie that is simply called, CHURCHILL. Oldman is still Oldman under a pile of Silicone makeup while Cox does far more with much less. I own both films and have compared them side-by-side; while both are riddled with inaccuracies CHURCHILL is simply more engaging than DARKEST HOUR, perhaps because Cox brings out Churchill's sense of humor -and sometimes impishness in his portrayal- that Oldman avoids like a case of the piles it is rumored the real Churchill endured from time to time.

If you're a Churchill fan -or even if you're not- do yourself a favor and check out Cox's characterization.

BTW: Oldman was first offered the lead role in CHURCHILL but turned it down when the producers of DARKEST HOUR offered him more cash to play the same man. As one does when one is only seeking artistic integrity.

That is also a good movie and I agree that Cox was better in the role than Oldman. However I liked Darkest Hour more as that focused on the early days of the war with a determined Churchill just becoming PM and leading his nation. The movie Churchill focused on his doubts around D-day and his frailty which after 4 years of war was considerable. Have you seen the movie Ike: Countdown to D-Day with Tom Selleck? It focuses on the same period and Ike's doubts over D-day.

Yes, I also own IKE: COUNTDOWN TO D-DAY and have watched it several times. I was surprised at how compelling Selleck was in the lead role and thought he really nailed Eisenhower's quiet strength of character and he even looked a great deal like him. I thought the weakest link in that film was Gerald McRaney playing Patton - he may have gotten Patton's snarkier side down but that was about it... but then again he only had a couple of scenes in the whole film and not much to work with.

BTW: IKE was filmed largely at a New Zealand girl's school as well as St. Paul's Church in Aukland where smoking was strictly prohibited and they had to get official permission to use cigarettes in those scenes; and since Selleck was a non-smoker, he had to learn how to do it. On his doctor's advice Eisenhower himself stopped smoking in 1949.

FYI: this is also one of the very FEW times you'll see Selleck minus his trademark moustache!

I still remember watching his funeral live in 1965 even though it was about 3AM local time here in the U.S.; at one point they floated his flag-covered casket down the Thames on what looked like a big yacht. Needless to say, that entire country stopped for a few hours that day.

Well the police state of Nazi Germany no longer exists which is a good thing. For the entire 12 years of Nazi rule the citizens of Germany didn't have the right to free speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press. The Nazi regime had the right to search any business or residence without warrant and to imprison any German citizen without charges or the right to see a judge. They could no longer vote for their leaders or voice disagreement with the Nazi policies.

So yes, the good guys defeated the Nazis. Yeah!

Winston’s Churchill’s achievements as prime minister of the U.K are hard to match. If you think about what you’ve accomplished versus what Churchill had, you may find yourself in a hole of despair. You may just want to reach for that bottle of beer or glass of whiskey to numb you from your lack of accomplishments.

Unfortunately, in doing so you’ll only be furthering those feelings of inferiority. You see, Winston Churchill was also a boozer, a sot, a lover of alcohol and he could definitely outdrink you.

Churchill’s unquenchable thirst for alcohol wasn’t exactly a secret. White House staffers in Franklin Roosevelt’s administration had a special term when Churchill came for a visit: “Winston Hours.” Basically, during this time the president and prime minister would get three sheets to the wind. Supposedly, Roosevelt needed to sleep for 10 hours a night for three nights to recover from “Winston Hours.”

 Quoting: EightyEight

Diefenbaker was Canada P.M. from 1957 to 1963. “During the course of my conversation with Sir Winston he offered to share with me one of his dearest possessions, some Napoleon brandy. He said: “Will you have some?” I replied: “I’m a teetotaler.”

He couldn’t understand what that meant. He checked his ear-piece and had me repeat it. I explained that I did not drink hard liquor. He asked: “Are you a Prohibitionist?” I said, “No, I have never been a Prohibitionist.” He considered this for a moment and then remarked. “Ah I see, you only hurt yourself.”

“All I can say is that I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.”

I'm not sure what you mean by "tard." If you mean "retard," then that is a derogatory term for someone with a mental disability. It is offensive and should not be used.

If you are simply saying that I will still be the same person in the morning, then I agree. I am who I am, and I will not change just because someone else is sober.

I am not sure why you are calling me names. I have not done anything to you. I am simply trying to help you.

If you are feeling angry or upset, I would suggest that you talk to someone about it. There are many people who care about you and want to help. You are not alone.
