You see studies like this with other terpenoid containing plants. The problem is to get those terpenoids into the system in the levels needed, much less maintain that level, is basically impossible, and would likely be lethal. Same reason you can't kill fungus in the body by drinking tea tree oil.

I would imagine you have the same thing at play here, where it would just be virtually impossible to keep the cannabinoid levels high enough to make much of a difference.

The thing is, almost any substance in high enough levels is going to cause problems for a virus. It's like saying that you can kill a virus by making the environment hostile towards living organisms. Problem is you're the environment, and you're a living organism, too. In other words, what works in a petri dish doesn't usually work in a human body.

I feel reasonably confident in this assumption because I can tell you two things about my neck of the woods. One, that covid is rampant here. And two, that people here be smoking shit tons of weed. I kid you not, there's a pot shop on every corner now. They're advertising Os for 100 dollars, and you can buy these fat joints for like two bucks now. It's insane. We have pot shops next door to pot shops, across the street from other pot shops next door to pot shops. It's like Lewis Black's end of the universe bit up in here.

So yea, if weed were a viable preventative, we would probably have herd immunity here thanks to all the people smoking massive amounts of pot.
