Discussion of the bs surrounding yearly mammograms -- Is this cash cow actually hurting us?
I am not making a comprehensive case here, just opening up discussion about this because I am always nagged by my docs to get more regular mammograms.

The data shows that the perception of the value of a mammogram does not equal the truth of the matter. From everything I have seen, routine mammograms in asymptomatic people add radiation to breast tissue for no reason. There are many false positives as well as many surgeries and chemo treatments that devastate immune systems and damage the body that are done on cancers that would never have grown or become problematic, but were "detected."

This makes mammograms a cash cow.

I have other stuff wrong...actual major illness stuff...and it is like pulling teeth to get callbacks to schedule the procedures. But with a mammogram, these assholes will call you to death repeatedly, the hospitals have telemarketers with a sales script that will harrass you to schedule.

I think routine mammograms are utter bullshit. Since their inception, deaths from breast cancer have increased, not decreased. Show me their efficacy, please.

While we're at it, show me where the billions spent on pink ribbon bullshit have changed breast cancer deaths in any significant way. I see no evidence of that, either. Still more bullshit surrounding breast health.

I trust the medical people less than ever after the events of the past two years. Much of medicine is a scam.

Change my mind.

Thermography is the way to go. By the time a mammogram pics up abnormal cells it's usually too late.

If your body has contained-encapsulated-damaging cells in teh form of a cyst or tumor the pressure of mammogram could feasibly release what your body contained.

I have read the same thing about biopsies, that the needle spreads it throughout the breast and sort of releases the bad cells, whereas if everything had been left alone, the thing would never have spread.

Also, I don't understand why if there is a need to look at breast tissue, why the ultrasound isn't the way to go since it does not emit massive radiation the way a mamo does.

I just don't get it. We have safer diagnostic tools, why are they always pimping the mamo.

I no longer trust these people. They have lost my respect completely, we will have to question every single thing going forward.

Many doctors have come forward and said the danger is in subjecting a woman's body to unnecessary radiation on an annual basis, and the fact that when they find a small node and decide that it should be cut into for a sample (biopsy). The potential cancer cells are then released into the body actually making the situation worse. Older doctors realized the harm in cutting into these sealed off nodes (lumps) which often dissolve away on their on.

Years ago I nurse said to me, why would you allow them to crush your breast tissue and let them radiate them? Does this sound healthy to you?

Thank you for opening up this delicate subject. Yes, docs heavily push the mammogram because the hospitals have a lot of money wrapped up in the equipment and they have to make it pay for itself. I have a lump found at age 16 and am now in my 70's. My old hometown doc advised against doing a biopsy for all things you stated and guess what...it's still there and no cancer yet.

Precisely. My understanding is that autopsies that have been done of very old people who died peacefully of natural causes often show the presence of cancers that were just sitting there doing nothing.

I am not making little of this...my own mother died of cancer at the young age of 52. I'm just saying...where is the rationality in the treatment approach? None of it is about saving lives...starting with the destructive food pyramid and the psychos of big pharma...every level of modern allopathic medicine is corrupt.

My sister in law went for mammograms every year. Then finally was diagnosed with breast cancer. Now she’s on some meds for FIVE years. I’m not sure what to think except she thought getting mammograms every year was the right thing to do. And I don’t understand why she has to be on meds for five years. They cut the cancerous tissue out, I thought that was the solution.

One of the many reasons I am skeptical that I have not mentioned yet: My mother had yearly mammos and her breast cancer never showed up on the mamos. She was diagnosed at Stage 4 because her hip hurt and it turned out it had been metasticizing throughout her body for years, docs said. It was everywhere at diagnosis and chemo only bought her a year and a half of sickness and misery.

They said it was a rare case where the mamo didn't pick up on it because it was too small.

So...they tell me I need more frequent mamos due to my mother.

Ridiculous. They failed her but use it as an example of why I should keep radiating my own breasts???

I miss her every day. She was just 52.

Largely its a scam, just like yearly flu shots. If you're worried, get them anyway. But most problems don't need constant doctors visits

I've got the bad gene from what killed my granny when it comes to breast cancer but I'm 63 and never would let anyone irradiate my breasts to check for lumps.

I do my own self check about once a month in the shower.
I have no lumps.

I am like you, I think a lot of it is bs to make money.

When I was in my fertile age, if always get a few nodules now and then that would come and go with my hormones shifting with my cycles.

My school has every teen girl scared to death over it.

My breasts are even healthier now that I don't have periods, absolutely no nodules either.

When and if I get my granny's brest cancer, I'll definitely know it as her breasts swell so much in just a few weeks that her nips became inverted before dying.

I've heard of women having their breasts completely removed over the "bad" gene, very expensive to do, more$$$.

Medicine is just a profit machine.
