Re: No fresh chicken today at 2 different Publix in central Florida....
Local grocery store in Rural NE Kansas has a deli for lunch where the normal chicken is breaded and fried on the spot. The last month or so it's been double what it had been but was still good meat so FJB and carry on.

The last week or so they've changed over to what you'd get at fast food places. Pre-breaded junk. Today they had a special for $4.99/lb. Usually when they do that with an item it's to get people used to it as it's what is staying for a while.

Didn't have time to swing by their regular meat section but the other night I'd noticed they were doing more spreading out to cover up their normal space with less product. So some issues could be there.

Something is ringing a bell in my brain from the 1970s

I remember chicken shortages during the time of inflation.

The big corporations like Kentucy fired Chicken or Chil fa la may be buying more chicken to hedge against inflation over the next few months.

And if there is a shortage, i beleive the food companies and corporations get the supply first.

Also the reason for the shortage may be because of inflation. the feed, workers, taxes, etc. may have put producers out of business or they decided to fold during the covid scare.

Either way it is because of government policy.
Jerusalem, my happy home,
When shall I come to thee?
When shall my sorrows have an end?
Thy joys when shall I see?

O Christ, do Thou my soul prepare
For that bright home of love
That I may see Thee and adore
With all Thy saints above.

Frozen purdue sh!t is almost gone too.

Beef selection is minimal and the price is off the charts also.

And the butcher says no trucks today. I hope everybody has a food supply. The quickest way to take down a society is the vanishing food supply.

Re: No fresh chicken today at 2 different Publix in central Florida....
Just got back from the butcher. I get 5 pounds of free range chicken breast every week. $6 a pound. 3 pounds of tritip $10/pound, 2 pounds of prime filet, $50 a pound, 2 pounds bacon at $9 a pound, and 2 pounds of pork belly at $6 a pound. The chicken breast has been $6 a pound for the past 5 years. Before that it was $5.50 a pound. Thighs are $4 a pound. This is free range, never caged chicken... it's completely different than any chain grocery store chicken, hard to explain. But this butcher I go to has plenty of meat, always, and the line is often long. But they have plenty of tritip, filet, picanha, ribeye (bone in, tomohawk, or regular), chicken thighs, breast, wings, and whole bird roasters, sausages of all types, 4 kinds of bacon, and skin on or skin off pork belly. They have pork chops, both regular and smoked, and pork loin. In the freezer they have bear, deer, wild boar. They also have a small selection of tuna, swordfish, and salmon as well as oysters in the shells. Never has there been a shortage of anything there. But also, most people don't shop there. It's primarily regulars that go there every week and their suppliers aren't the same as with a Publix or chain grocery store. But I've always paid more for their quality, it's worth it.

While their prices haven't changed too much, the grocery stores are a completely different story. Our overall food cost each month has gone from $1200 to $1700. We're spending $500 more a month on foodstuffs. And while that's not a problem for us at all, it has to be hard for many others
 Quoting: The Årtist

DANG!!!!!!!!!!!! $1200/mo is A LOT OF MONEY!!!!!!!!!!

We don't spend that much, but it's only 2 of us, plus 5 cats! Also, I have always bulk shopped, so I don't get caught off guard by not having/finding something I need. I usually have a supply of anything I need, and when it gets down, I replenish. I've always done this - not b/c of current hysteria (real or not).

Just heard this morning that a caller in to Chris Plante show said he was shopping in Wal-mart (don't remember the city) and THERE WAS *NO* MEAT!!!

That struck me odd. I've seen "shortages," but never NO - ZERO - meat in the coolers.

I think it's going to start showing up that way in lots more places. But I don't shop for staples at Wal-mart. Sometimes cat litter or bread....but mostly I go there for NON-grocery items.

I shop at a local meat market for most grocery items. But Publix has started showing shortages, too.

It USED to be 1200 a month. $300 a week. Now it's like $400 a week.. And if we need toilet paper it's more. Like I was saying, it's fine for us financially but I don't see how it's even remotely sustainable for the average American income. I hear on the radio and news that inflation on food is up like 4-5%... that's complete bullshit. And weird shit is always hard to find, like canned cat food, sugar free redbull, premixed protein shakes like the Premier Protein or Adkins, or whatever... always empty shelves. I thought the Hi-C type drink boxes and pouches were only out because of back to school several months ago, still picked over shelves.

Meat prices are easily up 20% here in Metro Atlanta in the grocery stores.

Connect with local ranchers that process their own meat, we get beef several dollars less then retail doing this.
Or chip in with your buddies, buy a cow and get it processed, split it, cheaper and full freezer of way better quality meat

Ha! "Hoarders" are those smart enough to know one day you "once a week and only what we will eat this week" buyers will go to do your "once a week" shopping and NOTHING WILL BE THERE. We're almost there now if you listen to all the reports from posters here.

It's not "hoarders" causing the problems. I've been stocked up on products for years. I only have to buy enough to re-stock after we eat a few cans/boxes. I NEVER buy multiples (as in 30-100) of any item. I simply buy as I use now. Although I have been known to throw in a few "extra" when they do "BOGO." Lately, Publix has been selling canned chicken BOGO, so when I buy one to get one, I actually buy TWO to get two. Helps me build up my stock.
